Conservative Brazilians heaped praise on Elon Musk at a rally in the capital of Rio de Janeiro supporting far-right former President Jair Bolsonaro. Musk is a target in an ongoing investigation over the dissemination of fake news by supporters of Bolsonaro. Musk said the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, wouldn't comply with a high court justice’s order to remove certain accounts accused of spreading disinformation. Musk recently accused the justice of suppressing free speech and violating Brazil’s constitution. Читать дальше...

Israeli leaders are harshly criticizing an expected decision by the U.S. to impose sanctions on a unit of ultra-Orthodox soldiers in the Israeli military. The decision, expected as soon as Monday, would mark the first time the U.S. has ever imposed sanctions on a unit inside the Israeli military. It also further strains relations between the allies that have grown grown increasingly tense during Israel’s war in Gaza. The move is especially surprising given the close ties between the two armies, which... Читать дальше...

President Joe Biden frequently cites insulin prices as he promotes a $35 price cap for Americans with diabetes who are on Medicare. Roughly 8.4 million people use insulin, and more than 1 million have Type 1 diabetes and could die without regular access to the medication. The White House says nearly 4 million older people qualify for the new lower price, which Biden says compares with up to $400 monthly before. But many benefiting from the price cap were already paying far less and others were already Biden supporters. Читать дальше...

Life in Port-au-Prince has become a game of survival, pushing Haitians to new limits as they scramble to stay safe and alive while gangs overwhelm the police and the government remains largely absent. Some are installing metal barricades. Others press hard on the gas while driving near gang-controlled areas. The few who can afford it stockpile water, food, money and medication, supplies of which have dwindled since the main international airport closed in early March. The country's biggest seaport is largely paralyzed by marauding gangs.
An acute housing shortage hitting fire survivors on the Hawaiian island of Maui is squeezing out residents even as they try to overcome the loss of loved ones, their homes and their community. The situation is prompting state lawmakers to consider giving counties the authority to phase out vacation rentals. Hawaii Gov. Josh Green got so frustrated about the large number of short-term rentals that he blurted an expletive during a news conference. The deadly wildfire in August burned the core of Lahaina’s residential housing stock. Читать дальше...
Carpets of yellow, orange and gold flowers are beginning to cover stretches of Southern California’s vast deserts, the Bay Area's dramatic bluffs and even the fields near Los Angeles International Airport. But they don't quite make for a “superbloom” like the one seen across the Southwest last year. Scientists don’t agree on a single definition. Superblooms generally refer to low-elevation desert regions. April is typically the peak month for spring wildflowers, but in high-elevation places they can continue to blossom later into the spring. Donald Trump has canceled his first planned rally since the start of his criminal hush money trial because of a storm in North Carolina. It's an added complication for the former president and presumptive Republican nominee as he juggles legal troubles and his rematch against President Joe Biden. Trump called into the rally on Saturday near the Wilmington airport less than an hour before he was scheduled to take the stage and apologized to a few thousand supporters who had gathered throughout the afternoon. The United Auto Workers union is celebrating a huge win at a Volkswagen plant in Tennessee, where workers will now be represented by the union. The UAW won a stunning 73% of the vote after losing two elections there in the past decade. That is giving the UAW hope of making broader inroads in the South, the least unionized part of the country. The union's next target is two Mercedes-Benz plants in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where workers will vote next month on whether to join the union. Harry Katz, a labor-relations professor at Cornell University... Читать дальше...
