Joe Brennan, Democratic former governor of Maine and US congressman, dies at 89

Two-term Maine governor and former U.S. Rep. Joe Brennan has died at age 89. Brennan was a Democrat whose hardscrabble childhood shaped his working-class views. He was also an Army veteran who attended Boston College under the G.I. Bill and graduated from the University of Maine Law School. A longtime friend says Brennan died Friday evening at his home in Portland with his wife at his side. That was just a few blocks from the third-floor tenement housing on Munjoy Hill where his Irish immigrant parents raised a family of eight children. Читать дальше...

Small town businesses embrace total solar eclipse crowd, come rain or shine on Monday

Small town businesses are embracing the eclipse crowds, as weekend festivities heat up before Monday's big event. Overcast skies are forecast for Monday's cosmic wonder across Texas, already packing in eclipse chasers. Daytime darkness will follow a narrow corridor from Mexico's Pacific coast to Texas and 14 other states all the way to Maine and the eastern fringes of Canada. Waxahachie, a half-hour's drive south of Dallas, is pulling out all the stops with eclipse-themed soap and other goodies.... Читать дальше...

Power restoration efforts in Maine and New Hampshire have entered yet another day as more than 100,000 homes and businesses remain in the dark several days after a powerful spring storm. New York City's skyscrapers are built to withstand most earthquakes

New York City's skyscrapers might seem especially vulnerable to earthquakes like the one Friday. But engineering experts say skyscrapers are built with enough flexibility to withstand them. Experts say New York’s skyscrapers have been generally built to withstand winds and other impacts far greater than the earthquakes generally seen on the East Coast. The 4.8 magnitude quake Friday morning was centered about 45 miles west of the city in New Jersey. Aftershocks continued, with a 2.5 magnitude quake on Saturday morning. Читать дальше...

It's expected to top the single-event fundraising record recently set by Democratic President Joe Biden, who raised $26 million at a gathering with former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. P&G recalls 8.2 million bags of Tide, Gain and other laundry detergents over packaging defect

Procter & Gamble is recalling more than 8 million bags of Tide, Gain, Ace and Ariel laundry detergent packets sold in the U.S. and Canada. That's because there's a defect in the products’ child-resistant packaging. According to P&G and regulators in both the U.S. and Canada, the outer packaging meant to prevent easy access to the liquid laundry detergent pods can split open near the zipper track — posing serious risks to children and others who may ingest them. It could also lead to possible skin or eye injuries. Читать дальше...

Authorities are seeking a suspect who allegedly started a fire outside the Vermont office of U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders. The small blaze Friday caused minor damage but no injuries. Police in Burlington say a male suspect sprayed something on the office door, lit it on fire and fled. The Burlington Fire Department responded Friday morning and found a fire between the vestibule, the elevator and the entrance door of Sanders' third-floor office. The fire was extinguished and no one was injured, though... Читать дальше...

Anonymous users are dominating right-wing discussions online. They also spread false information

As the presidential election draws nearer, the spread of bogus information online is getting a huge boost from social media accounts that have been created anonymously. A post this past week about a surge in new voters registering without photo ID is the latest example of how these accounts have come to dominate right-wing political discussion online. The post was intended to imply that people who are in the United States illegally were planning to vote this year. The accounts enjoy a massive reach... Читать дальше...

When will Fed cut rates? As US economy flexes its muscles, maybe later or not at all

Ever since the Federal Reserve signaled last fall that it was likely done raising interest rates, Wall Street traders, economists, would-be homeowners — pretty much everyone — began obsessing over a single question: When will the Fed start cutting rates? But now, with the U.S. economy showing surprising vigor, a different question has arisen: Will the central bank really cut rates three times this year, as the Fed itself has predicted — or even cut at all? A blockbuster March jobs report reinforced... Читать дальше...

Some states are seeking to restrict TikTok. That doesn't mean their governors aren't using it

Efforts to ban TikTok from government devices have picked up steam in the past year in state legislatures and Congress even as politicians continue to use it to connect with and expand their base. Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro is a prolific poster, but legislation seeking to ban the app from state networks and devices could reach his desk soon. Researchers say using social media to connect with constituents has a long history. And it's largely Democrats having the internal debate about using TikTok... Читать дальше...

Powerball prize climbs to $1.3B ahead of next drawing

Lottery players are getting another shot at a Powerball jackpot that has grown to an estimated $1.3 billion after more than three months without a winner. There have been 40 consecutive drawings since the last time someone won Powerball’s top prize on New Year’s Day. The jackpot ranks as the eighth largest in U.S. lottery history and has grown so large because the long odds of 1 in 292.2 million make winning so difficult. The $1.3 billion prize is for a sole winner who is paid through an annuity. Читать дальше...

State Republicans killed an Indiana city's lawsuit to stop illegal gun sales. Why?

The northwestern Indiana city of Gary sued several big-name gun manufacturers and retailers in 1999, saying they could do more to prevent illegal firearm sales. In November, a judge finally ordered the companies to turn over years of business records. At that point, Republican state lawmakers intervened. A law signed by Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb in March prohibits anyone but the state from bringing civil action against the firearms industry. The law is applied retroactively, meaning Gary's lawsuit is effectively moot. As Yellen heads to Beijing, China worries that the U.S. is planning more tariffs on green tech

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. questions prosecutions for Jan. 6 attack, says he wants to hear 'every side'

Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is suggesting that the prosecution of rioters who violently attacked the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, may be politically motivated. Kennedy’s statement, issued by his campaign on Friday, further aligns him with former President Donald Trump’s narrative of the attack that delayed the certification of his 2020 loss and led to his impeachment. It comes a day after he came under fire for a fundraising email that painted a sympathetic portrait... Читать дальше...

Donald Trump is demanding a new judge just days before the start of his hush-money criminal trial

Former President Donald Trump is demanding a new judge just days before his hush-money criminal case is set to go to trial, rehashing longstanding grievances with the current judge in a long-shot, eleventh-hour bid to disrupt and delay the case. Trump’s lawyers urged Manhattan Judge Juan M. Merchan to step aside from the case, alleging a conflict of interest and bias because his daughter is a Democratic political consultant. The judge rejected a similar request last August. In court papers made public Friday... Читать дальше...

Judge dismisses lawsuit of injured Dakota Access pipeline protester

A federal judge in North Dakota has dismissed a lawsuit filed by a woman who was injured during a chaotic protest of the Dakota Access oil pipeline in 2016. Sophia Wilansky alleged officers “attacked her with less-lethal and explosive munitions” and nearly severed her hand. She sought millions of dollars in damages. She filed her lawsuit in 2018, followed by years of legal wrangling. The judge on Wednesday granted motions to dismiss the case. The controversial pipeline has been transporting oil since 2017.
