An AP photographer explains how he captured the moment of eclipse totality

Photographer Mat Otero works for The Associated Press in Dallas, Texas, just inside the path of totality for this week's solar eclipse. He created a solar filter and brought three cameras to the Dallas Zoo for the big event. Clouds rolled in. He thought he’d be skunked. Then, for just a few minutes, they parted during totality. Laying on his back with a tripod, he made a spectacular photo, showing the reddish trails of plasma looping off the sun’s surface. The image captured a fraction of a second in time... Gene Herrick, AP photographer who covered the Korean war and civil rights, dies at 97

Gene Herrick, a retired Associated Press photographer who covered the Korean War and is known for his iconic images of Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks and the civil rights movement, died Friday. He was 97. In 1956, Herrick photographed Rosa Parks being fingerprinted for refusing to move to the back of a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. That same year, Herrick captured an image of King smiling while being kissed by Coretta Scott King on the courthouse steps. Herrick joined the AP at age 16 during World... Читать дальше...

Biden convenes G7 to discuss the Iranian threat and prevent an escalation after the attack on Israel

President Joe Biden has convened the Group of Seven advanced democracies to coordinate a rebuke to Iran for its unprecedented aerial attack on Israel and to prevent a wider regional escalation. The United States assisted Israel in shooting down dozens of drones and missiles fired by Tehran on Saturday. It marked the first time Iran had launched a direct military assault on Israel. Israeli authorities said 99% of the inbound weapons were shot down without causing any significant damage. Biden says... Читать дальше...

A Pittsburgh congressional race could test Democrats who have criticized Israel's handling of war

An election this month in Pittsburgh and some of its suburbs is emerging as an early test of whether Israel’s war with Hamas poses political threats to progressive Democrats in Congress who've criticized the conflict. First-term Rep. Summer Lee is facing a primary challenge from Bhavini Patel, a municipal councilwoman. Lee has accused Israel of committing “war crimes," called for a cease-fire and demanded an end to U.S. military aid to Israel. That's veered from the stand taken by President Joe Biden... Donald Trump and Lindsey Graham are again at odds, now over abortion. The strife could help both men

The relationship between Donald Trump and Lindsey Graham has again turned negative after the South Carolina senator criticized Trump for refusing to support a federal abortion ban. Trump disparaged Graham on his social media site and said he regretted endorsing the senator during his last reelection campaign. Graham is a staunch abortion opponent who has pushed for a national ban in the Senate and he didn't back down from his criticism, saying Trump’s view was an “error.” But some observers of the... Israel hails 'success' in blocking Iran's unprecedented attack. Biden now seeks diplomatic response

Israel has hailed the success of its defenses in the face of an unprecedented attack by Iran. Officials said Sunday that Israel and its allies have intercepted 99% of more than 300 drones and missiles launched toward its territory and sustained little damage. But tensions remain high, amid fears of further escalation in the event of a possible Israeli counter-strike. U.S. President Joe Biden said he would convene a meeting of the Group of Seven advanced democracies to coordinate a united diplomatic response. Читать дальше...

Can homeless people be fined for sleeping outside? A rural Oregon city asks the US Supreme Court

The rural city of Grants Pass in southern Oregon has become the unlikely face of the nation’s homelessness crisis as its case over anti-camping laws goes to the U.S. Supreme Court. The case has broad implications for cities, including whether they can fine or jail people for camping in public. Since 2020, court orders have barred Grants Pass from enforcing its anti-camping laws. Now, the city is asking the justices to review lower court rulings it says has prevented it from addressing the city's homelessness crisis. Читать дальше...

How to get rid of NYC rats without brutality? Birth control is one idea

New York lawmakers are proposing rules to humanely drive down the population of rats and other rodents. They are eyeing rat birth control and a ban on glue traps as alternatives to poison or a slow, brutal death. A city ordinance would establish a pilot program for controlling rat population by using birth control instead of lethal chemicals. A City Council member says the contraceptives are more ethical and humane than other methods. Some lawmakers in Albany are considering a statewide ban on glue traps. Читать дальше...

A jury of his peers: A look at how jury selection will work in Donald Trump's first criminal trial

Donald Trump’s history-making criminal trial is set to start Monday with a simple but extraordinary procedural step that is vital to American democracy. A group of regular citizens — Trump’s peers, in the eyes of the law — will be chosen to decide whether the former president of the United States is guilty of a crime. The process of picking a jury could take a few days. Lawyers on both sides of the case will have limited opportunities to try and shape the panel in their favor. The court will seek... Barges break loose on Ohio River in Pittsburgh, damaging a marina and striking a bridge

Pittsburgh officials say more than two dozen river barges broke loose from their moorings and floated down the Ohio River, damaging a marina and striking a bridge. Pittsburgh Public Safety says police, fire and emergency medical services responded late Friday. State transportation officials said one bridge was struck by a barge just before 2 p.m. Saturday. The bridge had been closed preemptively and will require an inspection before reopening. There were no reports of injuries. Most of the barges were loaded with dried cargo. Читать дальше...

Trump goes after the judge and prosecutors in his hush money case in last rally before trial begins

Former President Donald Trump lit into New York prosecutors and the criminal hush money case they brought against him during his last rally before what he called a “communist show trial” begins Monday. Trump spoke on Saturday as Israel was fighting off a retaliatory drone attack from Iran that threatened to tip into a regional war in the Middle East. After a short mention of the attack, which he claimed wouldn’t have happened if he were president, Trump turned to an extended tirade against his own legal troubles.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. convenes hundreds in Iowa to try for access to November ballot

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has launched a one-day blitz to gain access to the state’s presidential ballot as an independent candidate. Whether he succeeded is an outstanding question. Kennedy attempted to qualify by holding a convention with at least 500 eligible Iowa voters representing at least 25 counties. Before adjourning the convention Saturday, chair Dave Owen announced that 686 delegates representing more than 35 counties in Iowa were in attendance, figures that could not immediately be verified.
