The O.J. Simpson case forced domestic violence into the spotlight, boosting a movement

Thirty years ago, women’s rights advocates working to pass the 1994 Violence Against Women Act found domestic violence was still something of a hushed topic. Then Nicole Brown Simpson’s death forced it into the spotlight. Americans riveted to the murder investigation of superstar ex-husband O.J. Simpson heard startling and painful details of the abuse she said she suffered at his hands. Simpson died Wednesday at 76. Advocates say the case became a watershed moment in American society as callers flooded... Читать дальше...

No link between Ozempic, Wegovy and suicide, EU drug regulators say

Drug regulators in Europe have found no evidence that popular diabetes and weight-loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy are linked to a higher risk of suicidal thoughts or actions. The European Medicines Agency announced the results of its review Friday. It's the latest group to conclude that there's no known tie between a new class of obesity drugs and suicide. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration also found no link. Both agencies said they would continue to monitor reports of possible thoughts of self-harm in people taking the drugs.

In death, O.J. Simpson and his trial verdict still reflect America's racial divides

For many people old enough to remember O.J. Simpson’s murder trial, his 1994 exoneration was a defining moment in their understanding of race, policing and justice. Nearly three decades later, it still reflects the different realities of white and Black Americans. Simpson died Wednesday but remains a symbol of racial divisions in American society because he is a reminder of how deeply inequities are felt, even as newer figures have come to symbolize the struggles around racism, policing and justice. US consumer sentiment falls slightly as outlook for inflation worsens

Consumer sentiment about the U.S. economy has ticked down but remains near a recent high, with Americans’ outlook largely unchanged this year. The University of Michigan’s index, released in a preliminary version, showed that sentiment is about halfway between its all-time low, reached in June 2022 when inflation peaked, and its pre-pandemic averages. An increase in gas prices may have contributed to the decline in consumers’ outlook. Americans’ perceptions of future inflation also edged up, likely reflecting still-elevated prices. US opens investigation into Ford gasoline leak, saying automaker's remedy doesn't fix the problem

The U.S. is investigating a Ford recall for gasoline leaks from fuel injector cracks that can cause engine fires, saying that the remedy doesn’t fix the leaks. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says in documents posted Friday that the probe will evaluate the adequacy and safety consequences of Ford's recall. It covers nearly 43,000 Ford Bronco Sport and Escape SUVs with 1.5-liter engines. Ford’s remedy for the leaks is installation of a drain tube to send the gas away from hot surfaces... A healthy US economy's secret ingredient: Immigrant workers, eager to fill jobs

Millions of jobs that new immigrants have been filling in the United States appear to solve a riddle that has confounded economists for at least a year: How has the U.S. economy managed to prosper, adding hundreds of thousands of jobs, month after month, at a time when the Federal Reserve has aggressively raised interest rates — normally a recipe for a recession? It turns out that the influx of foreign-born adults vastly raised the supply of available workers at a time when a labor shortage had left many companies unable to fill jobs. Читать дальше...

House will try again on reauthorization of US spy program after Republican upheaval

House Republicans will again try to advance a bill reauthorizing a crucial national security surveillance program. The second attempt Friday comes just days after a conservative revolt prevented similar legislation from reaching the floor. Speaker Mike Johnson is expected to bring forward a Plan B that would reform and extend a section of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act known as Section 702 for a shortened period of two years, instead of the full five-year reauthorization first proposed. If O.J. Simpson's assets go to court, Goldman, Brown families could be first in line

O.J. Simpson died without having paid the lion's share of the $33.5 million judgment a civil jury awarded to the families of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman. The panel found Simpson liable in a wrongful death lawsuit in 1997. Now, his money is likely to go into the court probate process. And the Goldman and Brown families could be at the front of the line to get paid a piece of whatever Simpson left behind. If he had any meaningful assets at all, his four children will... Teaching refugee women to drive goes farther than their destination

A greater Atlanta program called Women Behind the Wheel offers 14 hours of free drivers’ education to mostly refugee and immigrant women. Many of the women who enroll come from countries that discourage women from driving or working outside their home. However, the women and their families learn how access to their own transportation can help them build a future in the U.S. Women Behind the Wheel is unique to Georgia, but similar programs exist across the country. So far, there have been 230 graduates of the Atlanta-area program... Читать дальше...

Wisconsin woman who at 12 nearly killed girl won't be released yet from psychiatric hospital

A judge has turned down a request to release a Wisconsin woman from a psychiatric hospital, a decade after she nearly killed a girl at age 12. Morgan Geyser is now 21 and no longer takes antipsychotic medicine. She and another girl confessed quickly after the stabbing in 2014, saying they attacked a friend to please the online horror character Slender Man. Judge Michael Bohren says Geyser has a credibility problem after lately reporting that she attacked the girl for a reason other than Slender Man. Читать дальше...

AP WAS THERE: OJ Simpson’s slow-speed chase

The first week of the O.J. Simpson case in mid-June 1994 moved quickly, with reporters racing to reach the news. The only thing that was slow was The Chase. The football great had been accused of killing his ex-wife and her friend, and there he was on live television, in the back of his friend’s white Ford Bronco with a gun to his head. The freeway was like a parade — with the police, media and fans following “The Juice.” There were crowds on the overpasses, signs, cheers and fists punching the air as the pursuit unfolded.
