News organizations have trust issues as they gear up to cover another election, a poll finds

Americans have a message for news organizations as they prepare to cover the 2024 election: About half of Americans say they're concerned that outlets will report inaccuracies or misinformation. Roughly 4 in 10 say they're worried about outlets using generative artificial intelligence to write election news. Attitudes toward the media and political news ahead of the election were explored in a poll from the American Press Institute and The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Japan's Kishida will stress rules-based global order, support for emerging nations at OECD meeting

Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida says he will stress the need for a rules-based international order when he attends a meeting of the Organizations for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris. Kishida begins a six-day trip abroad in Paris, where he is scheduled to give a keynote speech at the OECD ministerial meeting on Thursday. He said he plans to step up efforts to support emerging countries, especially those in the Indo-Pacific region, to join the OECD, whose 38 member nations are mostly developed Western economies.

Arizona's Democratic leaders make final push to repeal 19th century abortion ban

Democrats at the Arizona Legislature are expected to make a final push to repeal the state’s long-dormant ban on nearly all abortions that a court said can be enforced. Fourteen Democrats in the Senate are hoping to pick up at least two Republican votes Wednesday to win final approval of the repeal bill. The proposal narrowly cleared the Arizona House last week and is expected to be signed by Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs. The near-total ban predates Arizona’s statehood and permits abortions only to save the patient's life. Читать дальше...

The S&P 500 fell 1.6% Tuesday to pull it further from its record set at the end of March. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 1.5%, and the Nasdaq composite sank 2%. Treasury yields rose again to up the pressure on stocks after a report showed workers won bigger gains in pay and benefits during the start of the year than expected. Читать дальше...

Workers and activists across Asia hold May Day rallies to call for greater labor rights

Workers, activists and others in Asian capitals are marking May Day with rallies and marches to call for better working conditions and greater labor rights. In Seoul, thousands of protesters sang, waved flags and shouted pro-labor slogans at the start of their rally on Wednesday. Organizers said their rally was primarily meant to step up their criticism of what they call anti-labor policies pursued by the conservative government led by President Yoon Suk Yeol. In the Philippine capital, Manila, hundreds... Читать дальше...

Police have cleared dozens of people from inside Columbia University’s Hamilton Hall after pro-Palestinian protesters occupied the administration building in New York earlier in the day. The scene unfolded shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday as police, wearing helmets and carrying zip ties and riot shields, massed at the Ivy League university’s entrance. Officers breached Hamilton Hall, an administration building on campus, to clear out the structure. The demonstrators had occupied Hamilton Hall more than 12 hours earlier... Читать дальше...

New era for pot regulation leaves old problem: Many cannabis companies can't find a bank

The Biden administration’s move to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous but still controlled drug was hailed as a monumental step in reshaping national policy. But it appears it would do little to ease a longstanding problem in the industry: a lack of loans and banking services other business take for granted. Many financial institutions don’t want anything to do with money from the cannabis industry for fear it could expose them to legal trouble from the federal government. American Bankers... Utah cat with a fondness for cardboard takes surprise trip to California in an Amazon box

A 6-year-old house cat from Utah likes hiding and playing with cardboard. The combination of the two made for a stressful trip in an Amazon package that led to a California rescue and a tearful reunion. Carrie Clark says her cat went missing on April 10 without a trace. She got a call seven days later with news the cat had been found in a box of work boots that had been returned to an Amazon warehouse in California. Clark realized the cat must have jumped in the box as her husband prepared to return several pairs of boots that he had tried on. Читать дальше...

Kennedy will serve in Congress for the rest of the year. He is on the ballot... Читать дальше...

Another six Republican states are piling on to challenge the Biden administration’s newly expanded campus sexual assault rules, saying they overstep the president’s authority and undermine the Title IX anti-discrimination law. It follows other legal challenges filed by Monday by nine other states including Alabama, Louisiana and Texas. Читать дальше...

Biden administration details how producers of sustainable aviation fuel will get tax credits

The Biden administration is out with new guidelines for tax credits for producers of sustainable aviation fuel. The announcement Tuesday is getting praised by the ethanol industry, but some environmentalists are disappointed. The tax credits are designed to boost production of cleaner fuel that could reduce emissions from planes. Congress approved the credits as part of Biden’s huge 2022 climate and health care bill, but until now the Treasury Department hasn't explained how producers will qualify for the tax breaks. What marijuana reclassification means for the United States

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration is moving toward reclassifying marijuana as a less dangerous drug. The Justice Department proposal would recognize the medical uses of cannabis, but wouldn’t legalize it for recreational use. The proposal still faces a potentially lengthy review process, but if is ultimately approved, it could have wide-ranging effects. It could make marijuana research easier. It could reduce taxes for legal cannabis businesses. Some advocates for legalized weed say the move doesn't go far enough... Читать дальше...

Trump says states should decide on prosecuting women for abortions, has no comment on abortion pill

Former President Donald Trump says it should be left up to the states whether they want to prosecute women for getting abortions or whether to monitor their pregnancies. The presumptive Republican presidential nominee declined to comment on access to the abortion pill mifepristone, which has been embroiled in an intense legal battle. The comments, published Tuesday in Time magazine, are consistent with Trump's recent attempts to seek a more cautious stance on the issue, which has become a vulnerability... Читать дальше...
