Mothers of two children with disabilities are suing an Indiana agency in federal court over changes to Medicaid attendant care services they say violate the Americans with Disabilities Act. A state agency proposed the changes as part of a cost-savings plan after it underestimated its future Medicaid expenditures by nearly $1 billion. The state will no longer reimburse parents, guardians or spouses for attendant care after July 1. Families of children who have medical needs requiring frequent attention... Читать дальше...
Through its long history, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has offered a way for people to get a quick read on how Wall Street is doing. But its importance is on the wane. Because it holds just 30 stocks and uses a quirky way to measure their impact on the stock market, the Dow has ceded its importance on Wall Street to other indexes. So even if the Dow's topping the 40,000 level is cause for celebration, it doesn't inherently mean much. What's more important is that it's one of the examples showing... Читать дальше...
A person wanted in connection with the random assault on actor Steve Buscemi on a New York City street earlier this month has been taken into police custody. City police say the 66-year-old star of “Boardwalk Empire” and “Fargo” was walking in Mid-Town Manhattan on May 8 when a stranger punched him in the face. Early in the pandemic, a surge of interest in cycling pushed sales up 64% to $5.4 billion in 2020, according to the retail tracking service Circana. The boom didn’t last. Hobbled by pandemic-related supply chain issues, the shops sold all their bikes and had trouble restocking. Now, inventory has caught up, but fewer people need new bikes. It all adds up to a tough environment for retailers... Читать дальше...
Hundreds of Air Force members in dress blues have joined Roger Fortson’s family, friends and others at a suburban Atlanta megachurch to pay their final respects to the Black senior airman, who was shot and killed in his Florida home earlier this month by a sheriff’s deputy. People lined up well before the start of Friday's service at the church in Stonecrest to file past the open casket to say their goodbyes to Fortson. He was shot May 3 by a deputy responding to a possible domestic violence situation at Fortson’s apartment complex. Читать дальше...
Former President Donald Trump has attended his son's high school graduation in Florida on a day off from his New York hush money trial and is heading to St. Paul, Minnesota, for a Republican fundraiser. Trump attended his son Barron's graduation Friday with his wife, Melania Trump, and her father. Trump is using part of the day granted by the trial judge for the graduation to campaign in Minnesota. No Republican presidential candidate has won Minnesota since Richard Nixon in 1972. But Trump came close to flipping the state in 2016... Читать дальше...
A section of California’s scenic Highway 1 leading to the famous Big Sur coast has reopened to around-the-clock traffic. The reopening came after stabilization of a storm-triggered rockslide that dropped a chunk of one lane into the ocean. The gap has yet to be closed, but a temporary signal system was activated Friday to allow alternating traffic each way on the undamaged lane. The reopening came just in time for summer travel. The rockslide hit on March 30 and hampered tourism. Access to Big Sur... Читать дальше...

A local council in Germany has approved a plan by electric carmaker Tesla to expand the grounds of its first plant in Europe, a proposal which has drawn persistent protests this year. Councilors in the Gruenheide municipality, just outside Berlin, voted 11-6 with two abstentions on Thursday evening in favor of the plan. It had been scaled down to require the felling of fewer trees than originally planned. Tesla wants to add a freight depot and logistical space to its factory, which opened in 2022. Читать дальше...
World shares are mostly lower though Chinese stocks reversed earlier losses following the announcement of fresh measures to revive the ailing property market. U.S. futures fell and oil prices edged higher. China's central bank said Friday that it was reducing required down payments for housing loans and cutting interest rates for first and second home purchases, among other moves. On Thursday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average briefly topped the 40,000 level for the first time but ended 0.1% lower. Читать дальше...
A federal lawsuit argues the way representatives are elected to a local school board in Pennsylvania's coal region is unfairly shutting Latino voters out of power. Nearly two-thirds of students in the Hazleton Area School District are Hispanic but no Hispanic has ever been elected to its school board. That's prompting a court challenge claiming non-Hispanic white voters are employing the district’s “at-large” election system to keep things that way. The district’s 78,000 residents are about 55% white... Читать дальше...
The National Rifle Association is kicking off its annual meeting in downtown Dallas, gathering for the first time in decades without Wayne LaPierre at the helm as board members prepare to elect his replacement. Though beset by financial troubles in recent years and following a trial in which a jury found LaPierre misspent millions of the NRA’s money, the group remains a political force. The three-day meeting starting Friday will feature a speech by former President Donald Trump, seminars, receptions and acres of guns and gear. Читать дальше...
The United Auto Workers union faces the latest test of its ambitious plan to unionize auto plants in the historically nonunion South when a vote ends at two Mercedes-Benz factories near Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The voting Friday at an assembly plant and a battery-making facility comes a month after the UAW scored a breakthrough victory at Volkswagen’s assembly factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In that election, VW workers voted overwhelmingly to join the union, drawn by the prospect of substantially higher wages and other benefits. Читать дальше...
Taiwan is reducing its reliance on the Chinese mainland as it seeks to insulate itself from pressure from Beijing and forge closer economic and trade ties with the United States. In a stark illustration of the shift, the U.S. displaced mainland China as the top destination for Taiwan’s exports in the first quarter of the year for the first time since the start of 2016. That's when comparable data became available. The world’s biggest maker of computer chips, TSMC, is among the companies shifting manufacturing to the U.S.... Читать дальше...
Severe thunderstorms have hit southeastern Texas for the second time this month, and Houston's mayor says at least four people are dead. There have also been windows blown out of high-rise buildings, downed trees and power outages for more than 850,000 customers. Flights were briefly grounded at Houston’s two major airports Thursday. The storm system moved through swiftly, but flood watches and warnings remained for Houston and areas to the east. Heavy storms slammed the region during the first week of May... Читать дальше...
