A powerful solar storm put on an amazing skyward light show worldwide overnight but caused what appeared to be only minor disruptions to the electric power grid, communications and satellite positioning systems. The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said extreme geomagnetic storm conditions continued, and there were preliminary reports of power grid irregularities and degradation of high-frequency communications and global positioning systems. But the Federal Emergency Management... Читать дальше...

On Wednesday, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said “outside agitators” working to “radicalize our children” were leading students to use extreme tactics. At a growing number of campuses, that label has been used to justify the use of force. It's part of a long history of state and federal officials dismissing protest movements as the work of outsiders. Читать дальше...
With a majority of Americans preferring to live in their own homes as long as possible, experts stress the importance of modifications to keep dwellings safe and accessible. The National Institute on Aging and AARP offer free room-by-room guides with practical suggestions for older adults living independently. They include having at least one exterior doorway with step-free access, installing a higher toilet, putting in a stove with safety features, and getting rid of furniture and clutter to make rooms easier to move around in. Living at home as long as possible is preferred by a vast majority of adults over 50. But the real estate market and inflation has made doing so less of a choice. Locked into low mortgage rates too good to give up, some baby boomers and older members of Generation X with enough extra case are making upgrades to keep their homes both enjoyable and accessible as they age. The demand for inconspicuous bathtub bars, showers that can accommodate a wheelchair and other amenities has given home improvement chains... Читать дальше...
Over the past two decades, Gee’s Bend quilts have captured the public’s imagination with their kaleidoscopic colors and their daring geometric patterns. Direct descendants of slaves in rural Alabama managed to cultivate a groundbreaking art practice while facing oppression, geographic isolation and intense material constraints. As of this year, their improvisational art has also come to embody a very modern question: What happens when a distinctive cultural tradition collides with corporate America? Читать дальше...
Smarter vehicles could mean some of the most dramatic changes for the traditional traffic signal since the yellow light was added more than a century ago. Researchers at North Carolina State University and the University of Michigan are testing how to tap into the new technology found in the U.S. vehicle fleet to directly influence traffic signals and reduce congestion. The North Carolina State study even imagines a time when there could be so many self-driving vehicles on the road that a fourth light... Читать дальше...
A promising start has given way to challenging political realities for supporters of a bipartisan commission to tackle the federal government’s growing debt challenges. House Speaker Mike Johnson lauded the idea of establishing such a commission on his first day in office. Then, a House panel passed with bipartisan support a bill to create a 16-member “fiscal commission” — 12 from Congress and four outside experts without voting power. But hits from the left and the right are taking a toll. Many... Читать дальше...
The United Auto Workers is aiming for a key victory at Mercedes-Benz in Alabama. More than 5,000 workers at the facility in Vance and nearby battery plant will vote next week on whether to join the UAW. The vote comes a month after workers at a Volkswagen factory in Tennessee overwhelmingly voted to unionize. A win at Mercedes would be a major prize for the UAW, which is seeking to crack resistance to unions in the Deep South, where states have lured foreign auto manufacturers with large tax breaks, lower labor costs and a nonunion workforce.
The alleged sexual encounter at the center of Donald Trump’s criminal hush money trial got a graphic airing in court this past week as porn actor Stormy Daniels shared her account before a rapt jury. Daniels’ testimony about her time with Trump was by far the most awaited moment of the trial, which now enters its fourth week of witnesses as prosecutors come close to wrapping up their historic case. But it wasn’t all salaciousness. Manhattan jurors saw documentary evidence meant to directly tie Trump... Читать дальше...

Rudy Giuliani has been suspended from WABC Radio and his daily show canceled over his violation of a ban on discussing discredited 2020 election claims. The former New York City mayor says the station’s ban was overly broad and “a clear violation of free speech.” Giuliani issued a statement saying he had heard of WABC Radio owner John Catsimatidis’ decision through “a leak” to The New York Times. He said he hadn't been informed before Thursday of the ban. Catsimatidis confirmed his decision to The Associated Press.
A newly released ad promoting Apple’s new iPad Pro has struck quite a nerve online. The ad shows a hydraulic press crushing just about every creative instrument artists and consumers have used over the years — from a piano and record player, to piles of paint, books, cameras and relics of arcade games. Resulting from the destruction? A pristine new iPad Pro. Apple’s intention seems straightforward: Look at all the things this new product can do. But critics have called it tone-deaf — with experts... Читать дальше...
