Arizona's Democratic leaders make final push to repeal 19th century abortion ban

Democrats at the Arizona Legislature are expected to make a final push to repeal the state’s long-dormant ban on nearly all abortions that a court said can be enforced. Fourteen Democrats in the Senate are hoping to pick up at least two Republican votes Wednesday to win final approval of the repeal bill. The proposal narrowly cleared the Arizona House last week and is expected to be signed by Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs. The near-total ban predates Arizona’s statehood and permits abortions only to save the patient's life. Читать дальше...

New era for pot regulation leaves old problem: Many cannabis companies can't find a bank

The Biden administration’s move to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous but still controlled drug was hailed as a monumental step in reshaping national policy. But it appears it would do little to ease a longstanding problem in the industry: a lack of loans and banking services other business take for granted. Many financial institutions don’t want anything to do with money from the cannabis industry for fear it could expose them to legal trouble from the federal government. American Bankers... Utah cat with a fondness for cardboard takes surprise trip to California in an Amazon box

A 6-year-old house cat from Utah likes hiding and playing with cardboard. The combination of the two made for a stressful trip in an Amazon package that led to a California rescue and a tearful reunion. Carrie Clark says her cat went missing on April 10 without a trace. She got a call seven days later with news the cat had been found in a box of work boots that had been returned to an Amazon warehouse in California. Clark realized the cat must have jumped in the box as her husband prepared to return several pairs of boots that he had tried on. Читать дальше...

The Biden administration is out with new guidelines for tax credits for producers of sustainable aviation fuel. The announcement Tuesday is getting praised by the ethanol industry, but some environmentalists are disappointed. What marijuana reclassification means for the United States

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration is moving toward reclassifying marijuana as a less dangerous drug. The Justice Department proposal would recognize the medical uses of cannabis, but wouldn’t legalize it for recreational use. The proposal still faces a potentially lengthy review process, but if is ultimately approved, it could have wide-ranging effects. It could make marijuana research easier. It could reduce taxes for legal cannabis businesses. Some advocates for legalized weed say the move doesn't go far enough... Читать дальше...

Trump says states should decide on prosecuting women for abortions, has no comment on abortion pill

Former President Donald Trump says it should be left up to the states whether they want to prosecute women for getting abortions or whether to monitor their pregnancies. The presumptive Republican presidential nominee declined to comment on access to the abortion pill mifepristone, which has been embroiled in an intense legal battle. The comments, published Tuesday in Time magazine, are consistent with Trump's recent attempts to seek a more cautious stance on the issue, which has become a vulnerability... Читать дальше...
