Let the record show that even before I heard Maggie Rogers' third studio album, Don't Forget Me, I likened it to the kind of music worthy of a wholesome, early aughts romcom—one that would see a 30-something Sandra Bullock losing everything only to rediscover it (and so much more) back in the rural hometown she'd previously fled. Whether I was describing the premise of Hope Floats matters little. There was just something about the album's two lead singles (its warm title track "Don't Forget Me" and... Читать дальше...
Welcome back to Barf Bag. For two brief weeks, there was speculation that spoiler presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. had reportedly been considering anti-vaxxer Jets quarterback—quarter-quack?—Aaron Rodgers as his running mate. Despite RFK choosing some wacko rich lady instead, the NFL player is still riding hard for his pal. But it's getting a little weird and perhaps Rodgers' friends need to cut off his access to YouTube. In a two-hour-and-thirty-five-minute podcast interview released on Tuesday... Читать дальше...
If the course of true love never did run smooth, then it’s fair to say the course of reality TV-manufactured love seems to run the same smooth course every single time. The Golden Bachelor’s Gerry Turner and his bride and winner, Theresa Nist, have reached the point in their made-for-TV romance that almost all of their predecessors have crossed before them: divorce. The lovebirds, who married in a live television ceremony three months ago on January 4th, announced the dissolution of their marriage Friday morning on Good Morning America. Читать дальше...
Reader, walk with me. You're on a girls and gays trip to New Orleans, on Thanksgiving weekend. You find yourself walking through the corridors of the National World War II Museum. You take note of the walls, which are adorned with pieces of wartime ephemera; marvel at the life-sized fighter jet suspended overhead; consider the price of freedom while you contemplate your upcoming frolic through the French Quarter. You soon become immersed in a carefully produced soundscape playing through the speakers... Читать дальше...
In a jarring floor speech on Wednesday afternoon, two Maine Republicans pushed back on a bill (LD 227)—meant to protect people who travel to Maine for abortion care from prosecution—by claiming that the state's abortion laws were the reason for the deadly mass shooting in Lewiston in 2023. Specifically, state Rep. Michael Lemelin (R) said the passage of LD 1619 in the fall, which expanded abortion rights in the state, led to the shooting that killed 18—and that passing LD 227 now could take Maine down the same path... Mark Clearview performs at "Love, Sex, Magic" in January. Photo: Alex S. K. Brown Hot Mic is a weekly column by Leah Abrams documenting, spotlighting, and reviewing live comedy in NYC. When I hear the word “magician,” my first thought is like, a brace-faced bar mitzvah boy who learns how to make a salt shaker disappear and performs for his grandparents at every Jewish holiday. My second thought is Gob from Arrested Development. Neither of whom I consider hot. But Jenny Gorelick is on a mission to make magicians sexy and last week... Читать дальше...
Once upon a time, Gina Carano played a character on Disney’s The Mandalorian. Then, Disney, a private corporation, decided to cut ties with Carano in 2021 over a series of wildly offensive comments about trans people and other issues, all while her Mandalorian co-star Pedro Pascal has a trans sister. And now, three years later, Carano is still begging us to care. In February, with the backing of noted transphobe Elon Musk, Carano filed a lawsuit against Disney for firing her, prompting something very funny to happen on Tuesday... Читать дальше...
