The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) office called for the protection and support of Afghan journalists on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day.
Roza Outoonbayeva, the representative of the UN Secretary-General in Afghanistan, emphasized the security of journalists on Friday, 3rd May, and stated that journalists’ work is crucial for an informed nation.
Ms Roza wrote in a message: “Despite the significant risks, journalists exert utmost effort to provide accurate information to the people of the country.”
This UN official in Afghanistan further added that journalists’ activities in the fields of environmental issues, “good governance,” economy, and health are commendable and should be supported and protected.
Meanwhile, the Afghanistan Journalists Center stated that in the past year, it recorded 136 violations of media freedom and journalists, including 73 threats and 64 cases of journalists’ detention in Afghanistan.
The U.S. Embassy for Afghanistan also emphasized on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day that a free press plays a key role in keeping citizens informed and shaping public discourse on important issues, and called for strengthening press freedom in Afghanistan.
