Thomas West, the U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan, met with Lana Nusseibeh, the new Deputy Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates, on Monday.
They emphasized the importance of joint cooperation in implementing UN Security Council Resolution 2721 and assisting the people of Afghanistan, particularly Afghan women.
The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on its social media platform X that the two sides discussed “cooperation in ensuring security, stability, and prosperity for all Afghan people, especially Afghan women.”
In this meeting, Lana Nusseibeh stressed the importance of supporting the rights of Afghan women and strengthening their role in society.
Thomas West also appreciated the UAE’s support and emphasized the continuation of bilateral cooperation to advance common goals.
West added that the two countries “share views on the economy, security situation, and the need for a unified diplomatic approach to Afghanistan.”
Resolution 2721 addresses the engagement with the Taliban government in Afghanistan. It was adopted with the aim of establishing a coherent and coordinated international approach to restore peace and stability in Afghanistan.
The resolution emphasizes the appointment of a UN Special Coordinator for Afghanistan. At the same time, the Taliban oppose the appointment of a new representative and consider the presence of the head of UNAMA in Afghanistan sufficient.
