Bill Gates, the head of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation urged countries to commit financially to fighting polio. He emphasizes that there is no guarantee of success in completely eradicating the disease.
According to Reuters, he welcomed Saudi Arabia’s $500 million aid for the global fight against polio yesterday, Sunday, April 28th.
Mr. Gates stated, “There’s no guarantee that we’ll succeed. I strongly believe we can, but achieving this goal is challenging.”
Saudi Arabia reportedly announced on Sunday, April 28th, that it will contribute $500 million over the next five years to fight polio.
However, Saudi Arabia ranks among the largest financial contributors to the polio eradication campaign.
The spokesperson for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative also stressed that the initiative is currently facing a shortfall of $1.2 billion.
Meanwhile, Afghanistan’s Ministry of Health announced yesterday that the first round of the polio vaccination campaign for over 10 million children in Afghanistan this year will begin.
Afghanistan and parts of Pakistan are the only two countries in the world where polio has not yet been completely eradicated.
