The European Union is examining the imposition of new sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran during a virtual meeting on Tuesday, April 16th, with the participation of foreign ministers from member countries.
The request for this meeting was issued by Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign policy chief, and during this session, new sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran will be discussed and put to a vote.
This meeting comes as Iran’s attack on Israel has raised widespread concerns about escalating tensions in the region and has been met with extensive condemnation.
No details of the proposed sanctions against Iran have been reported yet.
The Islamic Republic has not commented on this matter so far.
This comes after Iran’s response to Israel’s attack on its consulate in Damascus and the killing of several Revolutionary Guard commanders by launching over 300 missiles and drones into Israeli territory on April 14th. Israel and its allies assert that they intercepted and destroyed 99% of these projectiles.
Israel’s government downplayed reports of significant damage to its military bases resulting from Iran’s ballistic and cruise missile strikes, indicating that only one of its air bases sustained minor damage.
