Fewer immigrants without legal status since 2009, report says

SANTA ANA — The number of immigrants in the U.S. without documentation fell to 11 million since 2009, largely because of a drop-off in the number of Mexicans without legal status, according to a study released Tuesday. The report by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center — using survey data from 2015 — showed the number of immigrants lacking legal status was 11.3 million in 2009. The report shows illegal immigration climbed during the 1990s and into the 2000s and peaked before the recession.
