Fire Chief: blaze leaves Millbrae Community Center ‘a total loss’
Dozens of firefighters contained a four-alarm blaze that ripped through and destroyed the Millbrae Community Center, a popular city gathering spot, early Thursday, officials said.
Crews were doing “mop up” work putting out spot fires in the building and would likely be on the scene throughout the morning, said Chief John Kammeyer of the Central County Fire Department.
The blaze, which began in the attic, left the building at 477 Lincoln Circle “a total loss,” Kammeyer said.
The department estimates that the fire caused around $1 million in damages.
Solomon said she has taken classes there for community emergency response.
San Mateo County Sheriff’s officials at the scene said they would help investigate the source of the fire once the area was secured.
