The project, started by the nonprofit group RunDSM and Des Moines Public Schools' Urban Leadership program, was approved by the school district, the city and the Army Corps of Engineers.
A group leader learned Monday the mural was mistakenly covered by the city's graffiti removal program, which destroyed nearly 100 hours of work.
