Every second electric scooter accident occurred in Almaty - statistics

Tengrinews.kz — Since the beginning of the year, Kazakhstan has recorded 157 traffic accidents involving electric scooters.

Regions with the highest accident rates

According to the data from the Committee on Legal Statistics and Special Records of the Prosecutor General's Office of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the situation varies significantly across regions.

Almaty leads in the number of incidents. In the first eight months of the year, the city registered 107 accidents involving e-scooters, significantly higher than in any other region.

Astana ranks second with 24 accidents, while Shymkent recorded 6.

Among the provinces, the Aktobe, Atyrau, and Pavlodar regions registered the highest numbers, with 3 cases each.

The safest regions for e-scooter riders

Two accidents each occurred in the Zhambyl and Kyzylorda regions. One case each was registered in the Akmola, Almaty, West Kazakhstan, Jetisu, Kostanay, Turkistan, and East Kazakhstan regions.

Meanwhile, no e-scooter accidents were reported in the Abai, Karaganda, Mangystau, North Kazakhstan, or Ulytau regions.

Consequently, the majority of such accidents occur in the country's largest cities. Almaty and Astana combined account for 131 out of 157 accidents, representing approximately 83 percent of the total.

Regulatory changes for electric scooters in 2026

New requirements for electric scooter use have been in effect in Kazakhstan since July 1, 2026. Specifically, riders must be of legal age and hold a valid driver's license to use public roadways.

Rental e-scooters are also subject to registration, insurance, and additional operator requirements.

Additionally, as of August 25 of this year, electric scooters are prohibited from riding on sidewalks and pedestrian paths. For more details on the new requirements, see our article.
