[...] at the new year, when we're all looking for healthy options to reboot the system or just to stave off winter sniffles, we decided to take a look at juice made from the orange's smaller, citrus sibling - the tangerine.
The top spot went to Perricone Farms ($8.59 for 64 ounces at Rainbow Grocery), which is a far cry from last year's OJ results where the brand came in fifth.
Overall, panelists enjoyed the "tangy-fresh" and "slightly bitter finish" of the juice, though one panelist noted "slight tangerine oil notes" and wondered if the juice might have been "oversqueezed."
Several panelists found this brand, owned by Starbucks Coffee, to have a "sweet" and "pure tangerine flavor," offering "good balance between sweetness and acid."
[...] one panelist felt it was reminiscent of the "juice of canned mandarin oranges."
Panelists were Linda Anusasananan, food writer, San Mateo; John Carroll, cookbook author, San Francisco; Shelley Handler, food consultant, San Francisco; Emily Luchetti, chief pastry officer, Waterbar and Farallon, San Francisco; Rosemary Mark, recipe developer, Walnut Creek.
