UFC Fight Night: Murphy vs. Barboza took place May 18 at the UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada. Featherweight veteran Edson Barboza (24-11) took on up-and-coming contender Lerone Murphy (13-0-1) in the night’s main event. The fight aired live on ESPN+.

Round 1: Referee Herb Dean is our third man in the cage. They touch ‘em up and we’re off. Murphy with lots of feints early. Barboza kicks him right in the cup. Welp. OK, we’re back. Nice right hand slips through the guard for Murphy. Stiff jab for Murphy, Barboza answers with a heavy leg kick. Can’t eat too many of those. Barboza goes low again as Murphy flurries. Murphy doubles up his jab then smacks Barboza with an overhand right. Murphy has already opened a cut on Barboza’s nose. Barboza eats a right hand but responds with a low kick. Murphy going to work here with his boxing. Another long jab from Murphy. One-two from Murphy. Ooof, Murphy checks a hard low kick. That was loud. Barboza blocks a head kick. Barboza finds a home for a right hand over the top. Barboza clinches and tries to throw a knee, but stumbles. Murphy follows him to the ground and tries to unload some offense, but eats a nasty upkick. Damn. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 Murphy.

Round 2: Murphy seems to have shaken off that last upkick. He’s back to boxing beautifully, smacking Barboza with a combination. Another one-two for Murphy. Barboza just eats it and returns fire with a low kick. Right hand to the jaw from Murphy. Barboza goes back to that low kick again. These are starting to add up. Murphy rushes inside with punches then wrestles Barboza to the mat. Murphy working from standing back control here, and Barboza finally escapes to the center of the cage. Murphy comes in head-hunting and finds his mark! Big shots from Murphy! OHHH! Huge right hand! Barboza is hurt! Barboza misses a wild uppercut. Murphy has 70 seconds to work. Another flurry from Murphy! Barboza is getting desperate. He slips to the floor in a bizarre sequence and Murphy locks onto his back, standing. Not sure about this — Murphy had him on the ropes, now he’s giving Barboza time to recover. Finally, Murphy lets him go, but that’s the round. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 Murphy. (20-18 Murphy.)

Round 3: Murphy comes out firing. Barboza eats a big right hand. Barboza fires off a big body kick but Murphy just waltzes through it and flurries. Murphy darts inside and smacks Barboza with a combination, then changes levels for a double-leg attempt. No dice. Murphy stalks him with forward pressure, then goes back to a double-leg attempt. He can’t get it, but Barboza is looking tired now, and Murphy smells blood. The Brit isn’t giving Barboza any space here. Spinning back kick to the body by Murphy! Oh, huge flurry by Murphy! Everything is landing! Barboza desperately ties up. Big elbows inside the clinch from Murphy. He resets and fails on another double-leg attempt. Murphy is doing so well on the feet, I don’t understand this insistence on the takedowns. Murphy smacks him with a right hand. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 Murphy. (30-27 Murphy.)

Round 4: Murphy walks straight back into boxing range and goes to work. Low kick for Murphy. Herb Dean gives him a warning to watch his fingers for eye pokes. Murphy immediately cracks Barboza off the break. He’s landing at will here. Left hand stops Barboza in his tracks. And another. And another! Back to the low kick for Murphy. Barboza fires off a front kick followed by a low kick, only to get cracked with a long, looping shot. That one hurt him. Murphy’s jab is masterful right now. DAMN! Crazy loud spinning back kick to the body just landed beautifully from Barboza! Murphy just shakes it off. No idea how that didn’t hurt him. Murphy continues to pepper off punches, but he’s bloodied now. Barboza kicks the lead leg again. Murphy wades inside and bulldozes Barboza into the fence, working from back control as they stand. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 Murphy. (40-36 Murphy.

Round 5: They immediately rush to the center of the cage. Murphy goes body-head with his jab. Barboza whiffs on a spinning kick. Oh, Murphy connects with a beautiful combination, then closes the distance and ties up along the fence. Barboza frees himself and kicks hard to the body. Murphy continues working his game from boxing range. He’s battering Barboza here, but Barboza somehow still stands tall. Barboza eats an uncomfortably long series of jabs. High kick by Murphy is blocked. Barboza has two minutes to save this. Murphy slams a left hook into his head. Barboza kicks to the body and Murphy says nah, then bulldozes Barboza to the mat. He finally got his takedown. Barboza tries to stand but Murphy is on his back with one hook in. Murphy drags him back down but Barboza again works to his feet. Murphy unloads a series of short clinch knees from the standing position while still locked onto Barboza’s back. This is donezo. Barboza is a bloody mess. Sensational performance by Murphy.
