At this point, Netflix may officially be producing original content faster than even the most devoted fans can watch it, but that hasn’t slowed the streaming service down. On a short making-of documentary included on the Blu-ray release of the 2013 film The Purge, writer-director James DeMonaco says, “If it sparks any kind of discourse about violence in society, I think that’s a good thing. If people just enjoy it, great. But if they want to talk about violence, guns in our society, that’s great, too.” That kind of half-commitment to the film’s political elements defined the series until now, with the audacious 2018 prequel The First Purge. The Purge and its sequels ... Читать дальше...

Facebook is currently testing a new feature for Messenger that would identify suspicious accounts sending unwarranted direct messages, letting users know the account’s country of origin by phone number and whether it was recently created. After a few long years, Pepe the Frog is finally beginning to fade from the racist internet. With the help of a team of intellectual property lawyers, cartoonist Matt Furie has successfully petitioned The Daily Stormer, a popular, Trump-loving, neo-Nazi website, to remove almost all references to or images of his long-appropriated character. “We had seen for a while that they had been using Pepe images in a few places,” one of Furie’s lawyers at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP (WCPHD) said, according to a Motherboard report. Apple quietly introduced a significant privacy safeguard as part of the new iOS 11.4.1 update that was released on July 9th. USB Restricted Mode prevents USB accessories that plug into the Lightning port from making data connections with an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch if your iOS device has been locked for over an hour. This seemingly small change goes a long way in blocking tools used by law enforcement to crack passcodes and circumvent Apple’s encryption and built-in measures designed to shield sensitive user data. For years, having a baby in mobile life simulation game The Sims FreePlay was nothing more than a big blue button: press it, and a baby would magically appear. According to associate producer Joshua Birse, players constantly begged for a more in-depth experience that captured what it’s actually like to go through a pregnancy. But every time the studio got requests, Birse says, it would shut them down by saying it was “never” going to develop the feature. In 2018, things changed.

Tana Mongeau’s attempt to hold her own convention was a disaster. Conjuring immediate comparisons to Fyre Fest, the YouTuber’s short-lived VidCon alternative promised free meet-and-greets, talks, and concerts. Instead, it delivered long lines, dehydration, and little to do. The event was canceled after its first full day, leaving fans who paid their way to Anaheim out hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars, with little hope for refunds. It also left many would-be attendees wondering if they’d been scammed. Читать дальше...
