The poster explained that there are two main causes for yellow sparse lawns.
They pointed out that some grass varieties are considered “worse” than others.
However, a more common issue often arises with even the healthier kind of grass.
“For most people, they aren’t properly fertilizing going into winter,” the Redditor explained.
They revealed the key ingredient that can transform the look of your lawn.
“You need to be putting down a good amount of nitrogen in the weeks leading up to winter dormancy,” the lawn care pro said.
“It turbocharges the plant so it has everything it needs to come out of dormancy as soon as it can.”
The poster explained that the concept is often referred to as Fall Nitrogen Blitz by lawn geeks.
Gardening experts at The Lawn Forum broke down the science behind the simple step.
“If you could only do one thing to your lawn for the entire year, fall nitrogen is it,” they said.
“As air temperatures start to cool down, they approach the prime temperature for growth of cool-season lawns.”
They added that cooler soil temperatures are also ideal for promoting root growth.
“Part of the fall nitrogen blitz approach is to provide nitrogen so the roots could recover from the summer damage and store the nitrate as carbohydrates during the winter,” the professionals explained.
“This extra build-up helps the lawn be more robust during the winter and faster green up in the spring.”

The experts at The Lawn Care Nut also weighed in on nitrogen’s importance.
“It’s the number one way to bring a visual response to the lawn’s color,” they explained.
According to the lawn care professional, you may see results within 10 days of applying the ingredient to your grass.
“Nitrogen is an important macronutrient for all plants because it is a major component of chlorophyll.
“Chlorophyll is the element by which plants convert sunlight to energy by producing sugars from water and carbon dioxide.
“This process is called ‘photosynthesis’ and it cannot happen without adequate nitrogen.”
