WITH the weather finally starting to improve, it’s time to start thinking about the first grass cut of the year – if you haven’t done it already.
But lawn care goes beyond just running over it with a mower every time it’s looking a bit long.
A gardening pro has revealed his ‘spring up’ hack for looking after your lawn[/caption]Neil White, from Perthshire, has worked in horticulture as a landscape gardener and in a tree nursery.
Writing in Scotland Grows Magazine, he said he’s “cracked the code” to an awesome looking lawn with minimal effort.
In his simple three-step guide, he says regular cutting is indeed key to great grass – and he does his own at least once a week.
But Neil also said that keen gardeners should make sure that they regularly water their lawn.
And he’s got a very simple, and free, hack to check if your grass is in danger of drying out.
He said: “If you walk on your grass and it doesn’t ‘spring’ back up, it probably needs watering.
“A lawn affected by drought is more likely to become diseased and look like a big shrivelled up yellow lemon. So don’t let it happen.
“Unless you want to lose the respect of everyone you know and more importantly, yourself.”
The final step in Neil’s lawn guide states that you should make sure you regularly feed your grass and kill moss.
The dad of three revealed: “Feeding and moss kill is probably the most neglected aspect of lawn care.
And his key buy to keep your lawn healthy in spring is lawn sand which can be picked up for as little as £1.80 for a 1.5kg bag.
Elsewhere, a gardening pro has revealed a 65p hack which will kill your weeds overnight.
Weeds grow when there is space for them, and they sometimes can leave you trawling the shops for products to help get rid of them.
Harry Bodell, garden expert at PriceYourJob, has said there is a savvy hack using a cheap product.
The trick is to use some salt, water and mix them both together before pouring the liquid over the weeds.
But he did warn: “Use it sparingly and only on areas you wish to have no plants growing through, as it could impact future growth of other plants.”
