Shocking moment vile teenagers stamp on prison guard’s head during riot – leaving him with horrific injuries

THIS is the shocking moment two teenagers stamp on a prison guard’s head during a riot, leaving him with horrific injuries.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) released the distressing clip which reveals Finley Phillips, then 16, and Marzin Moshen, then 17, repeatedly punching the officer at Bridgend HMP Parc’s young offender unit in Wales.

The huge brawl was sparked when a fellow prisoner hit Phillips in the face, Newport Crown Court heard.

Prison guard and physical training officer Ryan Young tried to stop the fight which broke out in a communal area on the morning of July 18, 2021.

The pair launched their terrifying attack on the guard and knocked him unconscious.

Prosecutor Abigail Jackson, describing what happened, said: “Mr Young was restraining one of the males on the floor.

“His last recollection of the incident was, while he was on the floor, sustaining a number of blows to the head before becoming unconscious.

“Finley Phillips can be seen on CCTV punching Mr Young to the head before stamping on him.

“Marzin Moshen becomes involved in the incident once Mr Young is already somewhat incapacitated on the floor.

“He can clearly be seen stamping on the head of Mr Young.

“Both Mr Phillips and Mr Moshen were intending to injure another male prisoner but injured Mr Young himself.”

The brawl was eventually stopped by other prison officers.

Mr Young was found lying on the floor and dipping in and out of consciousness.

He was rushed to A&E and treated for a cut on his left eye with glue and paper stitches.

SUFFERED DELAYED CONCUSSION

Mr Young was unable to return to work for eight weeks as he suffered from delayed concussion.

He also had scarring to his eye, the court heard.

He has also struggled to sleep following the brutal attack and has undergone cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for the trauma.

The attack also left his family concerned, including his young son.

Mr Young told WalesOnline: “It’s a very challenging environment to work in. The support of my colleagues was invaluable to my recovery. We’re like one big family.

“It was not nice for them to witness what had happened and have to carry on.

“I can’t thank everyone who helped me enough.”

The court also heard about a separate incident where Moshen savagely attacked a man in Newport last May.

The victim Khalid Akbar had made allegations against Moshen and was due to be a witness in a possible trial.

While the prosecution never proceeded with that initial case, Moshen was charged over the attack on Mr Akbar, who had been left with eight rib factures and a wound to his forehead.

Recorder David Elias KC

Phillips, of Hartcliffe, Bristol, admitted grievous bodily harm (GBH) over the prison wounding.

Moshen, of Newport, admitted GBH and witness intimidation over the Newport attack as well as actual bodily harm (ABH) over the prison incident.

Moshen has 17 previous offences on record including violent disorder, robbery and dangerous driving.

His barrister Joshua Scouller said Moshen had issues with maturity, cognitive ability and impulsiveness.

Mr Scouller said: “He was closer in mental age to someone who would have been 15, if not younger, at the time of the [prison] offence. His involvement was rather more fleeting than Mr Phillips’.”

Phillips, whose girlfriend will soon be giving birth, has 20 previous offences on his record including battery, affray, ABH, fraud, burglary and criminal damage.

THE UK’S MOST BRUTAL PRISONS

HMP Wakefield

The prison is known as “Monster Mansion” because it holds some of the UK’s most notorious rapists, terrorists and serial killers banged up inside – including Sarah Payne’s killer who was knifed there in February 2024.

Paedophile Roy Whiting was left covered in blood after being stabbed in the maximum security jail.

In early August 2023, former Lostprophets frontman Ian Watkins was stabbed while serving his sentence and raced to hospital after the attack.

Elsewhere in the prison, serial killer Robert Maudsley – who tortured and murdered four men – spends 23 hours a day in a 18ft by 14ft underground Perspex box.

HMP Hewell

More than 1,500 serious offenders are kept locked up here.

In 2012, an armed gang held up a prison van leaving the Worcestershire site to spring drugs kingpin John Anslow.

Five years later, burglar Bilal Bashir absconded and went on a two-week crime spree, while in 2019 a report called the open prison the “worst in the UK”.

HMP Manchester

The prison is better known as Strangeways and has been home to major gangland figures over the years such as Dale Cregan.

Thomas Cashman, who murdered Oliva Pratt-Korbel, was remanded at the prison during his high profile trial at Manchester Crown Court.

For many the sprawling Victorian prison is synonymous with the riots that broke out in April 1990.

Pushed to breaking point by the appalling conditions, which saw cramped cells designed for one occupied by three, lags took control in the worst jail riot in British history.

Prisoners also stormed the segregation wing where they attacked sex offenders.

In total, 147 staff and 47 inmates were injured, while a prison officer also lost his life.

HMP Frankland

Operating for over 40 years, Frankland has the reputation as one of the toughest prisons in the country, housing many of the country’s infamous killers.

Britain’s most notorious prisoner, Charles Bronson, spent some time in Frankland prison in the early 90s.

The Yorkshire Ripper, serial killer Peter Sutcliffe, time at Frankland was short, lasting from August 2016 until his death, as he had served most of his sentence in Broadmoor psychiatric hospital.

Levi Bellfield, who murdered Milly Dowler, is serving a whole life order at Frankland.

Soham murderer Ian Huntley was convicted of killing Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in 2003.

He was transferred to Frankland on January 23, 2008, after he was attacked by another prisoner at Wakefield.

Serving Metropolitan Police officer Wayne Couzens earned his place at Frankland after he raped and murdered 33-year-old Sarah Everard.

His barrister Ian Morrell said: “Initially he believed he was suffering an attack and acted in self-defence against Mr Young.

“That, in large measure, perhaps explains why there was a delay in him pleading guilty to the offence. Mr Phillips has apologised to Mr Young, with whom he had and still has an affable relationship.”

The judge, Recorder David Elias KC, noted that Mr Young had been stamped on “very hard” and that Mr Akbar, a potential trial witness, had been subjected to serious violence while his back was turned.

He told the defendants: “It is clear Mr Young was not the target of your violence but there is a harrowing image of him on the CCTV lying motionless on the floor.

“He was simply trying to do his duty in a very difficult public service.”

He sentenced Moshen to 26 months in a young offender institution and Phillips to 16 months in a young offender institution.
