Big-hearted Race Across The World champs Emon and Jamiul to give £15k of BBC2 show winnings to charity

THEY landed the £20,000 prize by just 20 seconds in the Race Across The World finale.

But big-hearted winners Emon and Jamiul are not planning on a big splurge with their windfall.

The uncle and nephew are using their winnings to help street children and orphans

Instead, the uncle and nephew will use it to help street children and orphans.

In the BBC2 show, five pairs of travellers competed to be the fastest getting from Mexico City to Ushuaia in Argentina.

As they reached the finish line in Ushuaia, the world’s most southern city at the base of the Andes mountains, Emon and Jamiul told how they were moved by the plight of homeless kids on the trip.

In an exclusive chat, Emon said: “We decided whatever happened, we wanted to give money back to South America — £10,000 will help a lot.”

They will also donate £5,000 to Emon’s family orphanage in Bangladesh, and use the remaining cash to travel to see how their winnings are being spent.

Jamiul added: “We want to go there ourselves and see that money being put into action. We also want to go to Bangladesh. My grandad, Emon’s dad, has got an orphanage there.

“We want to be able to spend some time there as well. So the rest of that money, I think, will go towards us doing those things, and maybe a bit of a holiday, too.”

In the show, contestants are given the cost of an airfare. But no flights or smartphones are allowed as they race to the destination.

A dramatic final twist saw mother-and-son team Sam and Jo drop out after they ran out of money. In a sprint finish during Saturday’s episode, Emon and Jamiul pipped couple Rob and Jen at the last hurdle after more than 50 days of living out of a backpack.

Emon admitted he knew nothing about the show before his nephew applied on their behalf. Emon revealed: “He just said, ‘Do you fancy doing this show?’ I was like, ‘Yeah whatever’. I never thought anything would come of it. I’ve applied for every series of Hunted and Bear Grylls.”

One major part of Emon and Jamiul’s story on the show was how they had rekindled their relationship after Emon fell out with the family years earlier.

Emon said: “It’s made me realise how important family is. For ten years I was absent in my own little world. I just missed so much of the family.”

The Chase’s Anne won’t be beaten

SHE is the final obstacle between quizzers and the big prize – but Anne Hegerty doesn’t feel she should throw a question so challengers can win the cash.

The Governess stars in ITV’s new The Chase spin-off, Beat The Chasers, which starts at 9pm tonight. Viewers will see them working as a team to take down opponents.

Chaser Anne Hegerty says she never throws a question so challengers can win the cash

Anne said: “I’ve never thought, ‘I’m going to get this question wrong’ or, ‘I will deliberately throw this question’.

“But sometimes I’ve thought something like, ‘I wish I didn’t have to get this one right’ but I do, because I know the answer and it’s up to them if they don’t know it.”

But when Anne does occasionally fluff an answer, after her appearance she goes “straight on to Wikipedia  . . .  I have to find out about this thing”.

I guess that’s why she makes a good Chaser.

On the rare occasion Anne gets it wrong, she’s straight on Wikipedia to learn from her mistake

Bel to come back?

PERIOD drama Belgravia looks likely to get a second series – despite not getting the huge viewing figures of its predecessor Downton Abbey.

The creators are looking at how they can bring the ITV show back after it has proved popular in Britain as well as the US.

Despite not raking in as many viewers as Downton, Belgravia looks set for another series

Belgravia’s success in the States is partly down to the fact it comes from Downton writer  Julian Fellowes , who is hugely popular there.

And last week’s show finale left the story with potential for a follow-up.

A TV insider said: “Belgravia got respectable viewing figures when it aired in the UK. But getting a good response in the US is almost as important.

“That is why all those involved with the show are secretly trying to think of a way to create a sequel.”

Julian was teasing a second series before the first – which starred Philip Glenister and  Alice Eve – had been screened. He said: “This is a completed story. We will have to see if anyone wants more.

“We would need a new story with new characters.”
