GRAB your tub of popcorn and settle in. I love the Oscars, but it is always more exciting when you have seen the films up for awards.
Luckily, there are cheap ways to watch most of this year’s nominated movies. Here are my winning tips for a purse-friendly film night.
DVDs: Head to Tesco to buy two DVDs for £16, usually £10 each. Oscar-nominated films on sale include Once Upon A Time In Hollywood and Rocketman. Kids will love Toy Story 4. It is £10 at Argos, compared to £13 at Sainsbury’s.
SAVE: £4 with Tesco offer
NETFLIX: Marriage Story, The Two Popes and The Irishman are all streaming on Netflix. Sign up for a £5.99 per month Basic account and you will get a 30-day free upgrade to the £11.99 Premium option. Just remember to cancel after 30 days. An even cheaper tactic is sharing an £8.99 Standard account with a friend — you will be able to watch on two screens at once.
SAVE: £6 on a Netflix account
CINEMA: Loads of Oscar flicks are still on at the cinema. Download the Meerkat Movies app to get two-for-one tickets every Tuesday and Wednesday at Odeon and Vue. Vue also has Super Mondays, where selected venues offer discounted tickets.
SAVE: The cost of a cinema ticket
AMAZON PRIME: You can catch movies including Joker and Judy on Amazon Prime. Sign up for a 30-day free trial ahead of your night in, which is worth £7.99 per month. Again, make sure you set a reminder to cancel it.
SAVE: £7.99 on an Amazon Prime account
NOW TV: If you are more interested in watching the live ceremony, you will need a Sky Cinema Pass with Now TV. It offers a free seven-day free trial, so now is the time to register. It is usually £11.99 per month.
SAVE: £11.99 on a Sky Cinema pass
