She was not breathing.
“I just got home, I don’t know. I just saw my baby on the floor and I don’t know what to do,” said a distraught Parker Terwell, according to the newspaper.
“She’s cold. She’s gone.”
The caller from the home in Dayton, Ohio then said “I’m sorry. I don’t know what happened. I don’t know what happened.”
McKenzie’s death has been ruled an accident.
“The animal in question has been quarantined and an investigation into the events leading up to this incident is currently being conducted by the Dayton Police Department,” Lt. Jason Hall said in a statement.
“It is a really sad and awful situation,” local resident John Knabe told the Dayton Daily News.
“It was just dogs being dogs. It was very protective of its property, but I wouldn’t say it was vicious. Just a dog being a dog.”
McKenzie’s mother was sleeping on a couch at the time of the attack, according to a search warrant obtained by the Dayton Daily News.
“Mr. Terwell said he just arrived home, and his girlfriend and mother of the child, Mary Shoup, was asleep on the living room sofa,” read an affidavit obtained by the Daily News.
“Mr. Terwell informed officers that Ms. Shoup is on prescription medication.”
The medications were seen near the sofa, according to authorities.
