A MUM has admitted she was left devastated after her long-term partner didn’t propose on Christmas Day – and has been advised to now take matters into her own hands.
The woman explained on Mumsnet how she has been with her partner for five years, and they spoke of getting married when their finances are in order.
She said how her man, who she has a child with, had done overtime at work to save for a ring, and seeminglu dropped hints, but didn’t pop the question at Christmas.
After spilling out her woes on the parenting forum, some users advised she simply set the day without waiting for a proposal.
The mum wrote: “There’s been so many hints and I’m just confused like for example about a month ago me and DP were talking abut a ring that he’d brought me years ago, I was saying how I feel I need it fixed cause pf a small diamond falling out.
“He randomly came out with ‘I bet you don’t know what your ring size is now do you?’
“He then asked to look at the ring and put it on his baby finger whilst he was looking at it… AIBU to be feeling so down about this or am I just been really silly?”
Users were quick to chip in with their own words of advice.
One person wrote: “You are not a passenger in your own life. Just tell him you want to get married and plan on setting a date.
“He’ll either go along with it or refuse. Either way you’ll know where you stand.”
Another added: “If it means that much to you why can’t you propose? To be honest though, him saying he didn’t have the money for a ring sounds like an excuse. Don’t need an expensive ring to propose to someone if you really want to.”
And one wrote: “Why wouldn’t you ask him? I ‘proposed’ to mine. As with everything in life, if you really want something you have to do something for it.”
Some people advised that the woman propose to her man and even to set the date herself[/caption]However, some urged her to see it from his point of view and that he might not want to pick such a popular time to get engaged, or even want it at all.
One reasoned: “Generally men like to be the one to control this thing so if you carry on speaking about it, it’ll literally take even longer. I think there’s nothing worse than being proposed to on Christmas Day.
“It’s not original at all! Just enjoy spending time as a family and the rest will fall into place.”
