STORMS and heavy rain this weekend could wreck the start of the school summer holidays.
But fortunately, the bad spell of weather is not here to stay – a scorching 34C heatwave will soon touchdown in parts of the UK next week, according to the Met Office.
Millions of people could see a wet start to their summer break with showers expected right across the UK on Saturday.
Even on Friday night heavy thunderstorms are expected across Northern Ireland and southern Scotland with hail and lightning.
In parts of southern Scotland, somewhere between 10-20mm of rain could fall in just one hour.
Heavy rain is also due tonight in southern counties, mainly in Sussex and Kent.
The rain here is expected to be prolonged over a few hours and weather forecasters have warned that as much as 40mm fall in total.
Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill told The Sun Online: “Saturday could start with some sunny, warm spells but anywhere in the UK could also see some showers.
“Conditions will worsen in the afternoon, particularly in the east where thunder and heavy rain is expected.”
Up to 40mm is expected in these areas.
But along with the showers many places are expected to see a fine, warm and humid day, especially in the west where temperatures could reach between 25-26C.
Sunday is forecast to be very similar to Saturday with temperatures hitting 25-26C but there will still be showers lurking about.
However Northern Ireland and western Scotland will see wet and windy conditions coming in as the day progresses.
Chief Met office meteorologist Andy Page said: “As we head into next week temperatures will increase daily across much of England and Wales as hot air is drawn up from France and Spain.
“Temperatures could reach 34C by Wednesday in parts of central, southern or eastern areas and heatwave thresholds are likely to be reached in some places.”
Then most of the UK is due to swelter as a heatwave is due to hit on Monday as a blast of hot air sweeps in from the south which could possibly last until the weekend.
Most parts will be sunny and hot with temperatures hitting 29C on Monday while temperatures are set to go higher on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Many places on Tuesday will see the mercury hitting 33C, with eastern parts seeing the hottest temperatures.
But in the north west things will get wet and windy on Monday and could see between 100-150mm of rain fall from Sunday evening until Tuesday morning.
Wednesday could get even hotter with the thermometer hitting a high of 34C for many parts.
Although the Met Office did warn that the heat could bring some heavy thunderstorms on Wednesday as well.
Mr Burkill warned that those thunderstorms could break the heatwave, seeing a dramatic drop in temperatures but if that didn’t happen the heatwave was expected to last until the weekend.
