Trial Set For Navy SEAL , Marine Raider Accused of Murder of Green Beret, Staff Sgt Logan Melgar in 2017 in Mali:
Army Staff Sgt. Logan Melgar, 34, was found dead June 4, 2017 near the U.S. Embassy in Bamako in housing he shared with other military personnel. NCIS spokesman Ed Buice told USA TODAY after his agency took over the investigation from the Army Criminal Investigation Command in September, 2017.
A Naval Criminal Investigative Service investigation into the death of an Army Green Beret on deployment in Mali focused on two SEAL Team 6 members, Special Forces Association reported at the time of his death and funeral in 2017.
Charges included: a conspiracy in which the group obtained some duct tape when they entered into the Marine Quarters. They then went to the Army quarters and room of SSG Melgar and bound him with the duct tape. They placed him in a chokehold and strangled him, reported USNI, with more details of the official indictment at USNI here.
Preliminary hearings determined that two of the accused, Navy SEALs. Marine Gunnery Sgt. Mario Madera-Rodriguez and Navy SEAL Tony DeDolph will face Courts Martial. 19 Sept 2019. The Navy announced that a murder trial had been set. The two could face life in prison without parole Military times reported. Rear Adm. Charles W. Rock made the announcement.
Naval Special Warfare Operator Adam Matthews confessed in June of this year, and is serving time according to the report.
