A crowded welfare payment line in eastern Pakistan has turned deadly after a shop roof collapsed, killing at least eight women. Police and rescue officials say the roof gave way under the weight of a crowd. On Monday, more than 100 women gathered in Rahim Yar Khan district to collect government cash help before the Eid al-Fitr holiday. A rescuer said the shopkeeper told some women to move onto the roof. Others stayed inside the shop. The collapse injured more than 50 others. The payments come from the Benazir Income Support Program for low-income families.
