The head of Myanmar’s military government has granted amnesty to more than 10,000 prisoners, mostly political prisoners, and reduced other inmates’ sentences to mark a holiday. State media reported the amnesty Monday though the releases may take a few days to complete. There was no sign former leader Aung San Suu Kyi would be freed. The amnesty comes two weeks before the newly elected parliament is set to convene for its first session following the recent election that critics said was neither free nor fair.
