A dispute has reignited over the weekend between Iraq and Kuwait over their maritime border. The development has prompted Gulf Arab countries to side with Kuwait, putting Baghdad on the defensive on Monday. The dispute erupted again after Iraq recently submitted a map to the United Nations, reportedly coordinated with the world body, to delineate what it says are Iraqi areas in the Persian Gulf waters — areas that Kuwait claims infringe on its territory. Kuwait’s foreign ministry says Iraq’s claim includes two Kuwaiti shoals into Iraqi territory. Saudi Arabia says the map also affects a shared Saudi-Kuwaiti zone. Iraq says Kuwait filed its own maps in 2014 without consulting Baghdad.
