How do you know if an artificial intelligence system is so powerful that it poses a security danger and shouldn’t be unleashed without careful oversight? For regulators trying to put guardrails on AI, it’s mostly about the arithmetic. Rules or proposed regulations set by California, the U.S. federal government and the European Union all set a threshold of mathematical calculations per second. Too high and the AI model deserves special scrutiny to ensure it won't pose grave risks. AI safety advocates... Читать дальше...

For “Live Drugs Again,” the The War on Drugs' upcoming second live album out Sept. 13, frontman Adam Granduciel wanted to do justice to the ways in which the band has grown. It's literal, as they added a member since their first live album was released. But it's also figurative as musicians who have honed their sound. The album comes in tandem with the start of their co-headlining tour with The National, which kicks off Sept. 12 in New Hampshire. Granduciel also shares his disbelief in making it onto Beyoncé's “Cowboy Carter” album.

The necessary second-round vote is expected to carry by a similar margin before it is sent to the Senate. Mexico’s ruling party... Читать дальше...
America’s employers posted fewer job openings in July than they had the previous month, a sign that hiring could cool in the coming months. There were 7.7 million open jobs in July, down from 7.9 million in June. The pace of hiring picked up, though, from June to July. Wednesday’s figures indicate that fewer companies are seeking to add workers despite recent data showing that consumer spending is still growing. Last week, the government estimated that the economy expanded at a healthy 3% annual rate in the April-June quarter. Читать дальше...
