A recently signed agreement will open a direct line of communication between China and the Philippines’ presidential offices to try and prevent any new confrontation from spiraling out of control in the disputed South China Sea. China and the Philippines have forged such emergency telephone hotlines at lower levels of their bureaucracies in the past but the territorial faceoffs have persisted uncontrollably in the past year.
Germany’s top security official has banned a far-right magazine that she accused of stirring up hatred against Jews, people with immigrant roots and parliamentary democracy. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser on Tuesday banned Compact magazine and the company that publishes it, as well as a film production firm. Three hikers have died in suspected heat-related cases at state and national parks in Utah. The victims include a father and daughter from Wisconsin who got lost on a strenuous hike in Canyonlands National Park in triple-digit temperatures. Police and students say police fired tear gas and charged with batons during clashes between a pro-government student body and student protesters, leaving dozens injured at a university in Bangladesh. Protests have been occurring daily since a court ruled last month in support of a government job quota for descendants of veterans in Bangladesh's 1971 war of independence. The National Weather Service confirmed that a tornado hit Des Moines, Iowa, as storms rolled through Monday afternoon and into the night. Officials in France say a French soldier has been stabbed outside a big train station in Paris, and that the attacker was arrested. A French military official says the soldier was hospitalized but is not in life-threatening condition, and that the reason for the attack is being investigated. The official was not authorized to be publicly named. The soldier was among thousands of troops serving in the Sentinelle force for France’s domestic security.
