Judges at a European Union-backed court have convicted a former Kosovo Liberation Army fighter with involvement in the murder of one person and the illegal detention and torture of nearly 20 more during his country’s war for independence from Serbia in 1999. Pjetër Shala, also known by the nickname “Wolf,” was found guilty Tuesday of three war crimes – murder, torture and arbitrary detention -- by the Kosovo Specialist Chambers. He was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment. The court is part of the Kosovo legal system but based in the Netherlands.

A Spanish court says a body found on the island of Tenerife was a British teen who went missing nearly a month ago. The Canary Islands High Court of Justice said Tuesday that Jay Slater likely died from a fall in rocky terrain. Slater, 19, was last seen June 17 as he set out to walk from a village in the northwest of the island to where he had been staying in in the south. The trip would have taken about 11 hours. He called a friend early in the journey to say he was lost, extremely thirsty and his cell phone was dying.
A court in Kenya has allowed police to detain for 30 days a man suspected of killing and dismembering women then dumping them in a flooded quarry, as investigations continue. Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, 33 on Tuesday appeared in court accompanied by his lawyer John Maina Ndegwa who protested an application by the police to detain Khalusha further. Police in Oman say four people have been killed and others wounded in a shooting in a mosque. Pakistan’s embassy in Muscat confirmed that two of its nationals were among the dead. The Royal Oman Police said Tuesday the shooting happened in the Wadi Kabir neighborhood of Muscat, the Omani capital. Police gave no motive nor said who was suspected of carrying out the attack. Oman is on the eastern edge of the Arabian Peninsula. Such violence is rare in the sultanate.
Emergency services in northeastern Spain say nine people have been injured, three of them critically, in a dramatic bus accident at the mouth of a highway tunnel. The bus was carrying 50-60 textile workers. The bus appears to have hit the sloped edge as it was entering the tunnel and it was vaulted upward until its front came to a rest at the top.
