Stampede at religious event in India kills more than 100, mostly women and children

Authorities say more than 100 people in India were killed in a stampede when a crowd at a religious gathering rushed to leave a makeshift tent. It was not immediately clear what triggered the panic following an event with Hindu figure Bhole Baba in northern India’s state of Uttar Pradesh. Local news reports cited authorities who said heat and suffocation in the tent could have been a factor. Video of the aftermath showed the structure appeared to have collapsed. Police said at least 116 people died, most of them women and children. Читать дальше...

Parole denied for Indigenous activist Leonard Peltier, who has spent most of his life in prison

Indigenous activist Leonard Peltier has been denied parole after spending most of his life in prison since his conviction in the 1975 killings of two FBI agents in South Dakota. The U.S. Parole Commission says Tuesday that he won’t be eligible for another parole hearing until June 2026. His attorney argued that Peltier was wrongly convicted and said that the health of the 79-year-old was failing. The FBI and its current and former agents dispute the claims of innocence. Peltier was active in the American Indian Movement... Читать дальше...

Prosecutors ask France's highest court to rule on validity of arrest warrant for Syria's president

French prosecutors have asked the country's highest court to rule on the validity of the international arrest warrant for Syrian President Bashar Assad over complicity in war crimes during Syria’s civil war. A statement from the prosecutors on Tuesday says that Assad has absolute immunity as a serving head of state. Judges at an appeals court last week ruled against their argument and said the warrant issued by France in November for Assad is valid and remains in place. Lawyers for the Syrian victims have criticized the prosecutors' appeal... Читать дальше...

Giuliani disbarred in NY as court finds he repeatedly lied about Trump's 2020 election loss

Rudolph Giuliani has been disbarred in New York. The former New York City mayor, federal prosecutor and legal adviser to Donald Trump received the decision Tuesday from an appeals court in Manhattan. The court ruled Giuliani repeatedly made false statements about the Republican Trump's 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden. Giuliani had already had his New York law license suspended for false statements he made after the election. Giuliani was the primary mouthpiece for Trump’s false claims of election fraud after the 2020 vote. Читать дальше...

Former Adair Police Chief Brad Wendt was convicted in February of conspiring to make false statements to the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, making false statements to the agency and illegal possession of a machine gun. AI is learning from what you said on Reddit, Stack Overflow or Facebook. Are you OK with that?

Post a comment on Reddit, answer coding questions on Stack Overflow or share a baby photo on your public Facebook or Instagram feed and you are also helping to train the next generation of artificial intelligence. Not everyone is OK with that, and some longtime users are trying to delete their past contributions or rewriting them into gibberish, but the protests haven’t had much effect. It’s one of a number of issues social media platforms are grappling with as they try to adapt to the changes brought by generative AI.

Supreme Court sidesteps new several new gun cases, including challenge to state assault weapons ban

The Supreme Court has sidestepped a new set of Second Amendment fights. The justices on Tuesday declined to hear a challenge to an Illinois assault weapons ban and sent other gun cases back to lower courts, including a challenge to the law used to convict Hunter Biden. The moves come after the justices upheld a gun law intended to protect victims of domestic violence last month. That was the first guns rights case following their landmark ruling two years ago expanding gun rights. Challenges to gun... Читать дальше...
