Indigenous activist Leonard Peltier has been denied parole after spending most of his life in prison since his conviction in the 1975 killings of two FBI agents in South Dakota. French prosecutors have asked the country's highest court to rule on the validity of the international arrest warrant for Syrian President Bashar Assad over complicity in war crimes during Syria’s civil war. A statement from the prosecutors on Tuesday says that Assad has absolute immunity as a serving head of state. Rudolph Giuliani has been disbarred in New York. The former New York City mayor, federal prosecutor and legal adviser to Donald Trump received the decision Tuesday from an appeals court in Manhattan. The court ruled Giuliani repeatedly made false statements about the Republican Trump's 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden. Giuliani had already had his New York law license suspended for false statements he made after the election. A former small-town Iowa police chief has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for lying to authorities to acquire machine guns that prosecutors say he sold for his own profit. Former Adair Police Chief Brad Wendt was convicted in February of conspiring to make false statements to the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, making false statements to the agency and illegal possession of a machine gun. A new survey by Pew Research Center finds public support for NATO in some of the countries belonging to the Western military alliance. The survey was released Tuesday. It questions adults in 13 of the 32 countries that belong to NATO. In those nations, about 6 in 10 people say they back NATO. That ranges from more than 9 out of every 10 adults in Poland, to fewer than 4 out of every 10 adults in Greece. The survey comes ahead of a NATO summit next week in Washington and at a challenging time for the alliance.
A woman accused of crisscrossing the U.S. claiming to be an Irish heiress and scamming several victims out of tens of thousands of dollars has been extradited to the United Kingdom. The killings on Sunday are the latest in a series of violent attacks targeting aid groups and residents in the region.
