Theodore Roosevelt's pocket watch was stolen in 1987. It's finally back at his New York home

A silver pocket watch that belonged to President Theodore Roosevelt is back on public display at his home and national park site in New York, nearly four decades after it was stolen. The FBI and National Park Service announced this week that it was recovered from an auction house in Florida and returned to the Sagamore Hill historic site on Long Island. The watch was stolen in 1987 from an unlocked case at another Roosevelt historic site in Buffalo, New York. Who stole it and how remains a mystery. Читать дальше...

Corporations Want You to Rent, Not Own. Can Lawmakers Stop Them?

This article was first published on NerdWallet.com.

If you rent a house when you would rather own, pin some of the blame on corporate landlords.

The 10 biggest institutional investors owned more than 430,000 single-family rental homes at the end of 2023, and they continue to acquire houses to rent out to middle-class families. Corporate landlords seek to dominate the neighborhoods they target, simultaneously reducing the inventory of houses to buy while expanding the stock of houses to rent. Читать дальше...

Prosecutors rest in seventh week of Sen. Bob Menendez's bribery trial

Prosecutors have rested after presenting evidence for seven weeks at the bribery trial of Sen. Bob Menendez, enabling the Democrat and two New Jersey businessmen to begin calling their own witnesses to support defense arguments. Before resting on Friday, prosecutors elicited details about the senator's financial records by questioning an FBI forensic accountant. Prosecutors say gold bars and hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash found in a 2022 raid of Menendez's home were bribes. Defense lawyers... Читать дальше...

Yellowstone officials: Rare white buffalo sacred to Native Americans not seen since June 4 birth

Yellowstone National Park officials say a rare white buffalo sacred to Native Americans has not been seen since its birth on June 4. The birth of the white buffalo in the wild was the first recorded in Yellowstone history and is a landmark event for the ecocultural recovery of bison. That was according to park officials who confirmed the birth — an extraordinarily rare occurrence: A white buffalo is born once in every 1 million births, or even less frequently, the park said.

Music Review: Megan Thee Stallion’s fierce ‘Megan’ trades hot girl summers for a different freedom

Megan Thee Stallion's self-released third album, “Megan," is her first since reaching a settlement with her former record label 1501 Certified Entertainment after three years of litigation. It is also her first album since the end of the criminal case against Tory Lanez, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison in August for shooting and wounding Megan in the feet. The Associated Press' Maria Sherman writes in her review that “Megan” is born out of a newfound autonomy. It might sound harsh on ears expecting more feel-good... Читать дальше...

Nebraska regent suggests putting fans' ashes under the football field. Her idea was dead on arrival

A University of Nebraska regent has proposed a way for football-crazy Cornhusker fans to carry their fandom into the afterlife. Regent Barbara Weitz of Omaha suggested that when the stadium undergoes its next renovation, part of the plan could include building a columbarium under the field where departed fans would have their ashes inurned. Weitz says she made her pitch light-heartedly but noted the school faces a $58 budget million shortfall. Her proposal might be dead on arrival: Her fellow regents laughed at the idea.
