Looks like a nice weekend ahead, with some sunshine and light winds forecast.
Top marks to the BoM yesterday for their first Dangerous surf warning indicating swell direction (“large and powerful surf conditions along south facing coasts…”), but no dangerous surf warning at all today..
Conditions today were large and powerful at most places because of the high interval primary swell (above 10 second period) from South, meaning it refracted into corners normally protected from the South, and another one from the East. Definitely not a day for beginner surfers or for rock fishing etc and Messrs Wild and Wooley were out at most places. Flags were up at sheltered places for people who wanted to get their ankles wet, but no one ventured out the back with 2m whompers dredging sand off shallow banks.
(The BoM’s general “large and powerful surf conditions…” warning would have been ok, maybe with the helpful addition of wave period.. “large and powerful (high interval, primary swell 10-11 seconds from South) surf conditions …”, on the same basis that people work out for themselves what a forecast 20 k wind means for them.
Tomorrow, the peak wave period is expected to slip back under the magical 10 seconds, so the surf should be more manageable for a few days, Surf should look something like this~~~~~~~
Friday: around 2-2+ metres from South/South East
Saturday: easing back a little, somewhere in the 1-2 metre range South
Sunday: around 1-1+ metres South
Monday: ditto
Tuesday: around 1 metre or so
Wednesday: up a bit with wind , 1-1+ metres South East
Thursday: in the 1-2 metre range South East, with wind
Stay safe . Know your limitations and surfing experience.
Have fun!
