During the pandemic, Birmingham City Council introduced some pop-up cycle lanes across Birmingham that were intended to help people move around safely when public transport was impacted by measures taken to reduce the spread of Covid. Many of those pop-up cycle lanes have been retained and are gradually being made permanent. The cycle route from the city centre to Dudley Road is the latest of these upgrades, including some significant changes to the Middleway junction on the route.
Birmingham City Council (BCC) is consulting on the introduction of a modal filter at the junction of Holt Street and Lister Street, next to the Aston University campus, in order to reduce rat-running motor traffic. The two unclassified roads provide a route for car drivers to cut between Dartmouth Middleway and the Aston Express Way while avoiding congestion on Dartmouth Circus. Birmingham City Council (BCC) is consulting on improvements to the Vauxhall and Duddeston area, between Nechells Parkway and the railway line. This area is cut through by the B4132, running from the Middleway through the area, past Duddeston train station to connect with Nechells Parkway next to the railway. BCC say that in the past 3 years there have been 24 traffic crashes on this stretch of road, which has 3 schools along it and high levels of pavement parking.
Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) has put out a preliminary consultation on improvements to Hagley Road from Five Ways to the junction with Portland Road, which includes a segregated cycle track on the north side of Hagley Road. The plans only show a line on a map at the moment - there are no detailed highways plans for those of us who enjoy the details - but it is promising that TfWM want to have segregated cycle track alongside improvements to bus lanes here.
In 2020, Birmingham City Council (BCC) installed a temporary ‘pop-up’ cycle lane on Bradford Street, as part of the emergency transport measures introduced during lockdown. There was a consultation in November 2021 about making the scheme permanent, and the feedback from that has been used to revise the plans. The current consultation is on those revised plans, and closes on the 28th September 2025.
Birmingham City Council has drawn up plans for an extension of the A38 cycle route from Selly Oak to Longbridge, and is consulting on those plans during July 2025. These plans include a segregated bi-directional cycle track which goes down the central reservation, with changes to several junctions along the route to help the people on the cycle track.
