COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – Two Columbus police officers have been hospitalized after a cruiser collided with a wrong-way driver in the South Side of Columbus.
According to Columbus police a traffic collision occurred near the intersection of South Champion Avenue and Stanley Avenue at 10:57 a.m. in the Southern Orchards neighborhood. Three people were injured, including two officers, who were taken to Grant Medical Center following the crash.
A sergeant at the scene of the crash reported that a red SUV was seen driving in the wrong direction on South Champion Avenue, a one-way street. Two officers in a police cruiser attempted to stop the driver, but their vehicle was T-boned by the SUV and it continued south South Champion Avenue before it stopped near East Whittier Street.
Both officers were reportedly initially unconscious after the collision but are now in stable condition at the hospital. The suspect in the SUV was also taken to Grant Medical Center in an unknown condition.
The area of South Champion Avenue between Stanley Avenue and East Whitter Street is closed while authorities investigate.
