Bellarmine goes 1-1 at Boras Classic, Mitty softball beats Carlmont, De La Salle lacrosse picks up key win
Sophomore Nathan Choi had two hits, two RBIs and a home run to lead Valley Christian over Illinois school Mt. Carmel at the All Faiths Classic Tournament in Las Vegas.
Mt. Carmel led by a run in the top half of the third, but the Warriors responded in the middle innings.
Valley Christian took a one-run lead when Quinten Marsh was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and scored Tatum Marsh. Choi’s two-run homer capped off a four-run fifth inning that pushed the Valley Christian lead to five.
Hunter Fujimoto batted 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two doubles. Sophomore Alex Kim came in relief of starting pitcher Brock Ketelsen, striking out eight batters and allowing just two hits in 4 2/3 innings pitched.
Valley Christian bounced back after losing its first game of the tournament to Brophy College Prep (Arizona) and improved to 11-2.
The Bells lost their first game of the Boras Classic in five innings to the No. 1 team in the Sac-Joaquin section.
After Granite Bay took a 2-0 lead after the second inning, Bellarmine responded by scoring two runs of its own in the third to tie the game. The Grizzlies scored three runs in the fourth and seven runs in the fifth to win by mercy rule.
Nolan Randol scored a run and had an RBI in two at-bats for Bellarmine.
Bellarmine bounced back in its second game Tuesday, beating Bakersfield Christian by five runs.
The Bells scored four runs in the first and second inning to take an 8-3 lead going into the third. The Eagles got within two runs in the fourth, but that’s as close they would get as the Bells brought in runs late.
Dash Knight had two hits in four at-bats, totaling four RBIs and a double. Nate Turkington had three hits and scored two runs.
Bellarmine (8-2) will play Whitney at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
The Colts kept their winning streak alive, beating Newark Memorial in extra innings.
Jesus Vasquez knocked in Yash Gupta in the top of the eighth to give the Colts a one-run cushion. Vasquez then retired three of four batters in the bottom of the inning to seal the game for James Logan.
Vasquez finished the game batting 3 for 4 with an RBI and a double. Gupta had two hits, two RBIs and a run.
Newark Memorial junior Malosi Gaoteote totaled three hits and an RBI.
James Logan’s winning streak is at eight and the Colts are now 8-1, 3-0. Newark Memorial dropped to 6-4, 2-1.
The Wildcats overcame a four-run deficit and beat Menlo on a walk-off walk.
The Knights went up early, scoring five runs in the first inning. Woodside cut the score to 5-3 heading into the fifth, but Menlo extended its lead to five going into the bottom half of the sixth.
Woodside got hot in the sixth, scoring four runs to go down just a run heading into the final inning.
After scoring a run to tie the game, the Wildcats had the bases loaded with two outs when sophomore Cruz Torres went to the plate. With the count at 3-2, Cruz took a pitch outside the zone to bring home Trent Amoroso to win on a walk-off walk.
Amoroso batted a perfect 4 for 4 with two RBIs and a double. Vincent Vazquez had a hit and two runs.
Menlo senior Garrett Tran went 2 for 3 with four RBIs and a home run.
Woodside won its seventh straight game and improved to 10-1-1, 3-0. Menlo is now 10-4.
The Dons ran away with this game early.
Amador Valley took a 6-1 lead after three innings and scored five runs in the sixth in a dominant offensive performance.
Dons junior McKenna Charbonneau was perfect at the plate in four at-bats to go along with an RBI, a double and a home run. Taylor Oxe totaled two hits, four RBIs and a home run.
Pitcher Kaylee Davis struck out eight batters and gave up just a run in six innings pitched.
Kaycie Burdick scored Foothill’s lone run — a solo home run to right field in the third inning.
Amador Valley moved to 5-3, 2-2 while Foothill dropped to 8-3, 2-2.
Mitty’s offense came alive late in the game as the Monarchs defeated Carlmont to move to 9-1 on the season.
McKenna Woliczko was 3 for 3 at the plate with three RBIs and a triple. Olivia Anderson and Sara Pina each had three RBIs.
Kyleigh Mace came in relief of Georgia Sperling and struck out three batters, allowed just two hits and gave up no runs in 3 1/3 innings.
Carlmont is now 3-6 and will play at Aragon on Thursday. Mitty will have nine days before playing its next game against Monte Vista on April 4.
Encinal held on to beat Mt. Eden to win its fourth straight.
The Jets had a six-run lead going into the fifth, but the Monarchs found a way to make it a game late. Mt. Eden scored four runs in the sixth inning to cut the lead to 9-7, but Encinal pitched a shutout in the seventh to win the game.
Celeste Hurtubise had two hits and brought home two runs for Encinal, which is now 11-2, 5-1. Amaris Ruiz had two hits and two RBIs for Mt. Eden, which dropped to 8-2.
The Spartans picked up a key win in East Bay Athletic League play, dominating second-place Monte Vista with a fourth quarter scoring burst.
The Mustangs were down 7-5 heading into the final period of play, but De La Salle scored six goals in the fourth to win the game and take a one-game lead over Monte Vista for first place in the league standings.
Sophomore Kellen Dunn had six total points with three goals and three assists. Hudson Lee had four goals and Henry Benner had two goals for the Spartans.
De La Salle moved to 6-3, 3-0 and will play Amador Valley on Tuesday. Monte Vista dropped to 8-2 and is scheduled to face Foothill-Santa Ana on April 4.
