LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY)-- A week ago, UL Lafayette student Basil Brown was found dead on the campus. After an investigation, the student's death was ruled a suicide.
Since last week, students have come forward saying that the university is not doing enough to communicate to students what happened. Leading the charge is a social media account called UL Whistleblower.
News 10 looked into why this account is wanting to make a change for the good in the communication between administrators and students.
"The students right now don't have a place where they can voice their opinion and voice the issue that they're having and have them heard," one of the members of the UL Whistleblower team said. "So that's why we stepped up as fast as possible."
This Instagram account is gaining traction with UL Lafayette students; each post is about complaints students and faculty have about the school.
"These colleges, these departments, these research groups, should have more funding," the member said.
Another issue being addressed is student fees.
"They're feeling like they're not represented in the fact that they're paying for so many services and so many things they don't understand," the member said.
Lastly, one post gaining traction is about the state of the dorms.
"It's a breakdown in communication concerning maintenance issues like black mold in Agnus Edwards hall," the member said. "It's a terrible fact. We've gotten feedback that there was asbestos removal steps that have taken over just this past winter and that's been the case over the past several breaks there had been an asbestos removal process."
A resident assistant has reached out saying they have asked for help from the housing department but are getting little in return. The UL Whistleblower team talked with a maintenance person about it.
These are just a few concerns the account members have brought to the university.
"We're calling to the fact that there is no check and balance to what the university does and as different issues arise in the future. There is no check and balance provided on the university campus that is a reliable source of what students care about."
UL Whistleblower is currently promoting the protest on campus in response to the university's handling of Brown's suicide tomorrow.
They have also made two posts concerning the university's response. Organizers say the protest is not to martyr Brown, but to pressure the university for a better response and improved mental health protocols.
