Following the killing of five Chinese engineers in a suicide attack in Pakistan, the Chinese company suspended work on the Tarbela Dam development project.
Pakistani media reported that the Chinese company has sent more than two thousand workers home after the citizens of this country were killed.
Pakistani media reported on Thursday, March 28th, that this decision was made after five Chinese engineers were killed in a suicide attack on the “Dasu” dam. No group has yet claimed responsibility for this attack.
The increase in militant attacks in Pakistan, particularly targeting foreign nationals like Chinese engineers, Pakistani officials, and ordinary citizens, is worsening the country’s security and economic woes. These attacks jeopardise lives and deter foreign investment crucial for economic development.
Islam Adil, the Secretary-General of the Pakistan Workers’ Union, confirmed the halt in work for two thousand workers and said these workers deserve to receive half of their monthly wages until the project resumes.
The Chinese embassy in Islamabad said in a newsletter on Tuesday, March 26th, that these engineers were attacked around 1 p.m. local time in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province when their vehicle was en route to the Dasu power plant.
Pakistan’s War Journal reported that on Wednesday, General Sajjad Ghani, the head of Pakistan’s Energy Development Organization, visited the project site with the Chinese ambassador to assure Chinese engineers and workers about their security.
