The UN Security Council has agreed on a resolution calling for a ceasefire during Ramadan, urging all parties to respect it for a lasting peace.
Crafted by E10 nations, the resolution was approved with 14 votes in favor and one abstention, notably from the US.
This resolution, prepared by non-permanent members of the Security Council, calls for an immediate and sustainable ceasefire, the release of hostages, and the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
Meanwhile, the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, said on its social media platform X that, “Security Council just approved a long-awaited resolution on Gaza, demanding an immediate ceasefire, and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages. This resolution must be implemented. Failure would be unforgivable.”
The United States expressed concern that the ceasefire resolution might disrupt ongoing negotiations involving the US, Egypt, and Qatar to stop the hostilities.
By abstaining from the resolution, the United States also declined to endorse the demand for the release of all hostages taken during Hamas’ attack in southern Israel on October 7.
Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said: “We appreciated the willingness of members of this Council to take some of our edits and improve on this resolution. Still, certain key edits were ignored, including our requests to add a condemnation of Hamas. And we did not agree with everything in the resolution. For that reason, we were unfortunately not able to vote yes.”
The resolution also urges the parties involved in Gaza to adhere to international law.
This marks the Council’s first resolution for a ceasefire in the Gaza conflict.
