Following Israel’s warning of a ground assault on Rafah, the southernmost city in Gaza, which has turned into a refuge for millions of displaced Palestinians, the United Nations has admitted its inability to halt this war.
António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, witnessed the fourth attack during his regional trip at the Rafah crossing on the border between Gaza and Egypt, stating that millions of Palestinians residing in Gaza mark their New Year amidst Israeli gunfire and bomb explosions.
Referring to the inability to “stand by and watch so many people being killed,” he urged countries capable of stopping this war to take action because, as he stated, the United Nations is unable to do so (halt the war).
According to him, millions of Palestinians are trapped in a “never-ending nightmare,” and a potential Israeli ground assault on Rafah would be a “humanitarian disaster.”
He emphasized that hunger in the Gaza Strip is rampant due to months of war, and many people in this besieged area do not have proper iftar, and famine looms.
It should be noted that humanitarian aid convoys are stranded at the Rafah crossing and are not allowed entry into Gaza. This is happening despite many countries, including Jordan and the United States, recently airdropping food packages to Gaza.
António Guterres has commented on this, stating that we see these trucks on one side of the crossing and the shadow of hunger on the other.
Mr. Guterres will travel to Jordan as part of his regional trip and will negotiate with various parties, including Egyptian authorities, to address the current crisis in Gaza.
This comes as, according to the latest figures provided by the Gaza Ministry of Health, the number of Palestinian fatalities from Israeli attacks has reached 32,142, with the number of injuries totaling 74,412.
