Secretary-General of the United Nations criticized the halt of a queue of relief trucks at the Egypt-Gaza border crossing during his visit to the Rafah crossing.
António Guterres held a press conference in front of the Rafah gate and demanded an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza.
Speaking from Egypt’s Rafah Crossing, UN Chief Urges: ‘It’s Time to Silence the Guns.’
He stated that it’s time for Israel to commit to unrestricted access to humanitarian goods throughout Gaza.
The UN Secretary-General added that the organization will continue collaborating with Egypt to “optimize” the aid delivery to Gaza.
He said the long queue of stalled relief trucks on one side of the crossing and the looming shadow of hunger on the other is “a moral affront.”
“I want Palestinians in Gaza to know: You are not alone. People around the world are outraged by the horrors we are all witnessing in real-time. Palestinians in Gaza remain stuck in a non-stop nightmare,” he added.
Guterres also visited a hospital in El Arish where Palestinians from Gaza are receiving treatment.
Guterres was en route to the Gaza border while Israel has insisted on carrying out a ground assault on Rafah despite international pleas, including from its allies in the West.
A large portion of Gaza’s population of two million and 300 thousand people are now sheltering in Rafah.
Relief agencies say only about a fifth of the needed items have entered Gaza, and the only way to meet the needs in the besieged coastal areas is to expedite aid deliveries via land routes.
