The mass expulsion of Afghan migrants from Pakistan was a decision taken by the previous government of this country in November last year. Following this decision, over half a million Afghan migrants were expelled from Pakistan.
It is estimated that around 1.7 million Afghan migrants live in Pakistan without legal documents, and the new government of this country has announced the implementation of the second phase of this decision by continuing the previous policies towards migrants. The Interior Minister of this country has emphasized that illegal migrants, including Afghan migrants, must return to their country.
Mohsen Reza Naqvi, the Interior Minister of Pakistan, emphasized to reporters in Lahore on Tuesday what is referred to as the expulsion of illegal migrants. This is happening while, according to Pakistani media reports, under the directive of the Interior Minister of this country, the process of identifying Afghans living in the provinces of Sindh and Punjab has begun.
The previous government of Pakistan, on November 2023, simultaneously with the expiration of a one-month deadline for migrants to leave this country, began the first phase of expelling migrants throughout the country. Following this action, according to the statistics announced by the International Organization for Migration, more than 500,000 Afghan migrants crossed the border and entered Afghanistan.
The expulsion of Afghan migrants from Pakistan has three stages, the first of which includes expelling those who have no documents for residence in Pakistan. In the second phase of this process, migrants holding “Afghan citizenship cards” are supposed to be expelled. In the third stage of the expulsion process, migrants targeted for expulsion are those holding UN refugee cards.
The Taliban administration had stated after the formation of the new government in Pakistan that they expected to refrain from the policy of “coercion and compulsion” towards migrants. However, Pakistan intends to pursue the plan of expelling Afghan migrants to the end, which will be an unprecedented displacement.
