Local sources in Herat province have reported the deaths of at least 10 people, including a pregnant woman, as a result of heavy rainfall in several districts of the province.
According to sources, severe rainfall in the districts of Oba, Chesht-e Sharif, Adraskan, Robat Sangi, Gulran, Pashtun Zarghun, and Enjil led to flooding, resulting in casualties.
In one of these incidents, the house of a local mosque’s imam collapsed, killing four individuals, including a pregnant woman.
Eyewitnesses say, “This house belonged to the local mosque’s imam, where five people, including an unborn child, lost their lives, and one child and the imam himself survived.”
In another incident, the collapse of a house in the Sofi Abad area of Herat city resulted in the death of six family members, with four others injured.
Furthermore, following yesterday’s rainfall, the main roads in the center of Herat city were submerged, complicating traffic flow.
So far, local officials in Herat have not commented on these incidents.
The recent rains in several provinces have resulted in casualties and damages to citizens.
Herat province experienced a significant earthquake in October 2023, exacerbating the challenges faced by its residents. The seismic event has devastated homes and infrastructure, leaving many in urgent need of assistance and shelter.
Reports from the ground indicate the earthquake caused widespread panic among the populace, further stressing communities already dealing with the effects of severe weather. Emergency services and local NGOs are scrambling to provide support, but the scale of the disaster has overwhelmed existing resources.
The combined impact of the earthquake and the torrential rains has placed a substantial strain on Herat’s emergency response capabilities. Families are calling for increased aid and support as they navigate the aftermath of these back-to-back calamities.
