Incidents of racist or religious abuse rose 41% in the UK in the month after the Brexit vote in June, the British home office said Thursday. It said there were 3,886 incidents in July last year, but 5,468 in July this year. It also noted a 12% increase in homophobic incidents. A gay rights charity, Galop, earlier this week recorded a 147% increase in homophobic incidents from July to September.

Germany's constitutional court ruled on Thursday that the EU-Canada trade agreement Ceta can enter into force provisionally after approval by the EU Council. Activist groups had argued that Ceta must first be voted on by MPs or it would breach the constitution by excluding citizens from decision-making. [Ticker] Syrian terror suspect kills himself in German jail

A Syrian suspected of planning an airport attack in Berlin has killed himself in his prison cell, German officials say. Jaber al-Bakr was arrested in Leipzig on Monday after three Syrian refugees turned him in. The 22-year-old was on hunger strike and was under 24-hour surveillance, according to Der Spiegel. Bakr was granted asylum after arriving in Germany last year from Damascus province.
