Suddenly the answer is perfectly clear
This pilot fish is at a remote location and needs to get some work done on his laptop -- but when he starts up the machine, he discovers the mouse won't work.
"Annoying, but not a tragedy, as the touchpad still worked," says fish.
"But I don't like ignoring problems, even if I'm busy with something else. So every few minutes I'd pick at it a little more: Changing USB ports, making sure there was no lint blocking the laser aperture, etc.
"Then I noticed that the red laser spot from the mouse was shining cheerfully on the floor under the table -- the nice, clean, glass-top table. D'oh!
"With a sheet of notebook paper as a mouse pad, my hardware failure was miraculously fixed. If anyone else noticed, they were too polite to say anything."
